Did you?

What did the signal mean in your family?

I was out with a group of middle aged cyclists last night and we joked about doing it. Everyone got it and there was me thinking it was unique to my tight family.

From the swimming pool to home - "pick me up"
From home back to wherever we had been out to - "we got home safely"

Three rings for the Elven kings, under the sky.

AriettyHomily · 30/06/2020 20:42

Either pick me up from the station or I'm home safe.

Alsohuman · 30/06/2020 20:43

Home safe.

StCharlotte · 30/06/2020 20:48

Home safe.

TheFlis12345 · 30/06/2020 20:49

My family didn’t do it but my friends family do to this day, means home safe.

FiresideTreats · 30/06/2020 20:50

Home safe.

Rugbylife · 30/06/2020 20:51

Home safe, my eldest actually texts me “3 Rings” 😂

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 30/06/2020 20:51

It meant home safe, but sometimes I'd do it if I was at a friend's house and about to walk home so my mum would know when to start worrying. Then when I got home I'd ring my friend's phone so her mum knew I'd got home safe.

ThisIsGonnaHurt · 30/06/2020 20:52

We text 3 x ring emojis instead now Grin

I love that, it's brilliant!

Thinking back we used to use 3 rings for all sorts of things, obviously before mobiles we used the landline to ring 3 times to let our parents/friends know we were home ok but also I had some friends who weren't allowed to use the phone so we used to arrange on specific days that a friend would go to their nearest phonebox and do 3 rings and I'd call them back.

I am actually really glad we experienced life in that way rather than now, I find people are so much more flaky now, they don't have to make an effort etc and are generally more incosinderate when plans have been made as they know they can jsut not turn up/turn up on time and send a quick text. Also we would genuinely want to know someone was home safely as it could be days before you would know if they were safe.

CatBatCat · 01/07/2020 09:44

Mum used to tell me to give 3 rings but she would always answer before the 2nd ring!

chocolicious · 01/07/2020 10:40

It means home safe.We used it growing up long before the days of mobile phones.
Now my DCs just text or WhatsApp.
Changed days !

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 01/07/2020 11:28

Peter Kay nailed it

StCharlotte · 01/07/2020 12:33

I left home at 20. Even in my 30s if she knew I was going out I still had to do three rings!

Tlollj · 01/07/2020 12:38

I’m 56 I still give my mum 3 rings to let her know I’m home. Especially if I have to drive on ‘that motorway’.

kingdomcapers · 01/07/2020 20:34

Pre working from home my DH would text 3 rings when he was leaving office (💍🛎🔔)

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 01/07/2020 20:37

I’ve never heard of this.

mineofuselessinformation · 01/07/2020 20:38

Call me back - pre-mobile phone days.
My sister used to work rurally at a hotel, and my parents used to go and pick her up. They would call the phone back (payphone) to arrange pick-up.

Babymamaroon · 01/07/2020 20:43

We always said "give me the signal" to know we'd arrived safely.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 01/07/2020 20:57

Got home safe. Still do it now
