Furlough Problems

I was working in a £26K a year job up until March 6th this year, when I failed my probation.

However, the company offered me a different job (part-time, on lower pay) I accepted as I had nothing else. There was not a contract, after only about 10 days of the new job, the business shut due to coronavirus.

I assumed I wouldn’t get any furlough money, however in April and May I got 80% of my old salary (£1400). According to govt rules, if you were employed on Feb 28th, then you can get furlough.

However, this month I only received £350. Most payroll/ head office people are furloughed and not working. I eventually got a reply when I emailed, telling me that I was not eligible for furlough, as my employment ended on March 8th. I replied asking how they calculated the £350? ( It can’t be based on the new job as that was 16 hours at £10.10 an hour which 80% would work out at about £550, not £350).

I’m most annoyed that they suddenly did this without telling me, it’s a huge drop in income.

Sorry this is so long.

Do you have a manager you can ask?

Most people are furloughed, but there is apparently a contract manager still working.

Work out what you should have been paid at 16 hours and times it by 3.
I think you are still ahead of you work out the actual pay you received?

They should have been a conversation when furlough was agreed and one when they realised the error. Must have been a shock but you need more info.

Why times it by three?

If I was employed in my old job on February 28th, surely I should have been furloughed on that?

Technically if you were employed on 28th Feb & bring paid based on a £26k salary then yes your furlough amount can be calculated based on this which would work out to be £1733 before deductions & your employer can claim this amount through the scheme.

However as you at some point between 28th Feb & the date you were placed on furlough changed position & your salary decreased I think your furlough should be calculated based on the lower salary - furlough is costing enough without people being paid for a job they are no longer employed for & will not be returning to after the scheme ends.

I thought companies could re-employ people who had finished a contract to ensure they're covered by furlough...

Natasha-

The reason I lost the first job was partly due to coronavirus and I can’t go and get another job in the same industry when the businesses are all shut!

Three because you should have been paid three lower salaries if C19 had not happened.
April. May and June.

According to your OP you lost the original job due to failing your probation not COVID.

If you have a payroll department there must be someone still working within the department to process the payroll for those working & the furloughed staff - you need to contact them and ask how your furlough pay was calculated & whether this was based on your salary as at 28th Feb or the new lower salary.

Records of calculations must be kept for 6 years so they will be able to provide this.

The contract didn't come to an end. She was dismissed and later reemployed in a different role.

Furlough rules are complicated and have changed a number of times since the scheme started. All you can do is get clarification from your payroll department as to what they have paid you and why.
