Today I learned...

Today I learned it isn’t...

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take out, TCP

And that’s only because I happened to watch an ad (subtitled as DH has hearing loss) for the upcoming film about Aretha Franklin.

The shame!

What have you learned today/recently?

If you Google to check it's 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T, take care of T-C-B,' as in taking care of business.
What is TCP?

Dk20 · 29/06/2020 21:52

I recently learned (from my 6yo) that the earth takes 23hours 56 minutes to rotate - I always assumed it was an even 24 hours

TCP is an antiseptic, often used in the treatment of cuts and scrapes.

It kind of made sense in my head.... 😂😂😂

😂😂 every day's a school day

CatBatCat · 29/06/2020 22:36

@Dk20 I gotta ask what you thought leap years were for?

It's not "Take out, TCP", it's "Take care, TCP". Your version doesn't make anywhere near as much sense as mine does.

What on earth is this TCB rubbish?

RHOBHfan · 29/06/2020 22:40
@Dk20 I gotta ask what you thought leap years were for?
Leap years are because the earth takes 365.25 days to rotate around the sun, so every four years we have the extra day, surely?

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 29/06/2020 22:40

Tcb take care of business
TCP that stuff you dab on cuts?

RHOBHfan · 29/06/2020 22:41

@Ihavenoidea

It’s ‘Take care TCB’

TCB = ‘Take Care of Business’

OP posts:
RHOBHfan · 29/06/2020 22:42

Didn’t see @slipperywhensparticus ‘s post.

Anyway. It’s nothing to do with TCP. Apparently. As you were 😂😂

I've been singing TCP for YEARS. I can't change now!

BrandNewShinyThings · 29/06/2020 22:46

My mum used to tell me TCP stood for Terrible Cleaning Potion.
I had a weird childhood Confused

The length of the Earth's rotation does not determine the need for a leap day, that's determined by the length of the Earth's orbit round the Sun which is not a whole number of days.

If you look down on the Earth from a distant star when it the Sun is at its highest point over say London (noon GMT) and watch it rotate, then to complete 360 degrees does take 23h 56minutes, but in that time the Earth has moved in its orbit, so it has to rotate another degree before the Sun is over London again, completing the 24 hours and ensuring that noon GMT remains the point at which this happens. So a day is exactly 24 hours (give or take some miiliseconds for variability in Earth's rotation).

BobbieDraper · 29/06/2020 23:29

@CatBatCat

The leap year is because of the length of time we take to orbit the sun. Not because of the time it takes to rotate around our own axis.

OP, the time you have learned for rotation is if we wer looking are our planet from a different solar system. But when standing here, with the relative movements happening, it takes 24 hours. Thats why at noon, the sun is always highest in the sky.

If we lost 4 minutes a day, as you've suggested, we would eventually end up having our noon in the middle of the night. That's not how it works.

Zisforstripyoss · 29/06/2020 23:39

No way, I've always sung TCP!!

turquoise50 · 30/06/2020 00:46

@BrandNewShinyThings My dad used to joke that it was called Terrible Choking Poison! Mind you, he used to drink it (diluted!) as a cold remedy. 😂

Sunsetboater · 30/06/2020 00:59

My friend's mom always called it Tom Cat Piddle because that's what it stunk like. 😅

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2020 01:17

I always loved the description on the TCP bottle : halogenated phenolic bodies in water.

MissPiggee · 01/07/2020 05:10

That red bell peppers are ripe green bell peppers. I am 38 and I have gone through life never knowing this. All these pepers I have eaten, and my guinea pigs (generations upon generations of guinea pigs over the years) have eaten. And I never had an inkling.

Today I learned I have a real admiration for Kate ferdinand after watching her journey, poor woman has been amazing and has really struggled.

EmperorCovidula · 01/07/2020 05:18

@DadDadDad thanks for saving me from agonising about that for a few days while I was getting around to googling that.

My six year old recently told mean interesting fact about chess. Apparently the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 13th century. Upon looking it up i found out that it’s banned many many times over the years. I had no idea it was so contentious. billwall.phpwebhosting.com/articles/chess_bans.htm

Poochnewbie · 01/07/2020 05:28

My 3 year old was talking to me about tensile strength as we were building a play camp down stairs. I was trying to decipher what he meant and suggesting other words...then my husband shouted down the stairs and explained to me what it was...
My 3 year old was correct. He didn’t want the rope to break.
