Boss is playing dumb about pay rise...

I'm going back to work after my ML. Role is similar but slightly more specialised. (Originally I was supposed to go back to a different role but COVID changed the business needs).

I asked about my pay rise and he admitted that yes there will be one but didn't say anything else. I know by law he has to increase it as my previous salary will now fall under the MW.

No much point to this but feel so frustrated!

How about emailing something like:

It was good to catch up with you on xx date.

Thank you for confirming that my salary will be increasing from (date of return.)

Please could you confirm my new salary rate as soon as possible.

I am very much looking forward to returning to work on xx date.

Kind regards etc

I like Baloon's message but I'd be more direct... 'thanks for confirming that my salary will rise. For the new role I will be looking for £xx (slightly higher than you would be happy with), let me know when you would be free to discuss'.

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 14:55

But what's an acceptable increase?

By law they'll have to increase it by £172.

10% sounds like a lot, but that would.only take it to £20k. I'm grossly underpaid but there are no jobs in the area so have to be grateful with what I've got.

What do other people get paid for doing a similar job? Or to put it another way, what would they have to pay if they employed a brand new person to do the role? That's your answer.

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 17:50

They all get paid about the same. £18k. I got offered a similar role on a different company (different county but still in the SW) and the salary was £19k.

They're using my language skills but as much as they need them I'm the only multilingual person at work.

Sorry do you mean that £18k at full time will be under national minimum wage? Or have I misunderstood?

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 17:56

Yes it will be, as the pay me for 40hrs PW (not 37.5)

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 29/06/2020 17:57

Do does that mean your colleagues are under nmw?

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 18:02

I don't think so! Our new salary would have to be £18137 to be within MW (that's for 40hrs PW).

When I went on leaveast year a 18k salary for 40 hrs pw was still within MW

I would assume if you were paid NMW, then your salary will increase in line with the increase in NMW.

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 18:27

Yes Mrs unfortunately that's what I think will be the case

StealthPolarBear · 29/06/2020 18:38

With you, sorry

RandomMess · 29/06/2020 18:56

Ask for the national living wage?

Fressia123 · 29/06/2020 20:06

That would take it to £19k and change. I know everybody gets an annual pay rise but when I asked everyone said that's every year it's the same; fairly low.
