How long did it take you to learn to drive?

So lockdown has given me a kick up the arse, I will learn to drive!

Wish I did it years ago, I’m now 30 and feeling nervous.

My lessons begin July, I’ve had a few hours previously but feel as though I’m starting again 😩.

How long did it take you? I’ve got no one to practice with, just paid lessons unfortunately.

I’m also unsure how many hours to do, one a week? Four?

Thanks in advance 👌

5 years, over a hundred lessons and three tests Blush

Hey at least you passed! Was it worth it would you say?
I was hoping not to take more than a year but we’ll see 😂.

It took me just under a year and two tests! I think I took slightly longer than lots of people. I had one two-hour test a week, I think Smile

It took me around two years in the end.

Elouera · 29/06/2020 11:24

I had the benefit of practicing in mums car, plus had maybe 10 lessons in addition. Maybe 6-12mths? I was still in school though and had 1 lesson a week leading up the exam.

Do you really have no friends/family that would help you and supervise in their car? Even in a rural area or very quiet backstreets to get some extra practice in?

ChipstickCharlie · 29/06/2020 11:25

Started lessons in the March and passed in the June so 4 months. Had double lessons if I remember correctly

However this was in the days when you booked your test as soon as you started having lessons Grin err maybe 1992 I think

frustrationcentral · 29/06/2020 11:25

I don't know how many lessons I had in the end, but learnt on and off for about 8/9 years. Passed 3rd time aged 27

I just didn't really enjoy driving and struggled to find an instructor who I clicked with. In the end I found a lovely young instructor and the fact I then had a young child and was fed up getting his buggy on and off the bus was enough to get me going. I then found out I was pregnant the day before my final test and that really encouraged me to give it my best shot!

Bananalanacake · 29/06/2020 11:25

I was 3 years and 5 tests, sadly my instructors had a bereavement and I had to take a 6 month break.

Namechange8471 · 29/06/2020 11:26

I could ask around I suppose, I’m just really nervous to start (again!).

I passed after 6 lessons, a cancellation came up and my instructor said I may as well have a crack. I had parents to practice with though and that definitely helped. What also helped was the test was a whole lot easier I believe in the late 80s.

gamerchick · 29/06/2020 11:26

Took bloody ages. Do it now as many hours as you can. I did 1, 2 hour lesson a week.

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/06/2020 11:27

A relative of mine had about 60 lessons and never took a test. He probably just wasn't suited to it, although one or two of his instructors were pretty rubbish in his opinion.

Nichola2310 · 29/06/2020 11:28

I did 1 1hr lesson per week, took a year, and I hated every min of every lesson. However it's the best thing I ever did and I'm so glad my mum wouldn't let me quit.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 29/06/2020 11:30

5 months. I started to learn late August and passed late January. I had two lessons a week.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 29/06/2020 11:31

I had two instructors also. I didn't like my original one so swapped after the first block of lessons.

Funtcase95 · 29/06/2020 11:35

I was hideously nervous, started lessons when I'd just turned 17. Took me a few lessons to not absolute shit myself each time but you get there. Once I got into the swing of things, I think it took me 8 months and passed both theory & practical first time. You may feel nervous now but it gets easier! Now all I do is cars - huge car enthusiast!

A part of me really wants to get stuck in, I see people driving and I’m so jealous 😳.

About 18 months of weekly lesson and 4 tests Blush. I was a terrible learner I just couldn't pick it up. Even when I passed I felt like I didn't know what I was doing. I can honestly say it wasn't until I went out in my car alone after passing that everything clicked into place.

Bloodybridget · 29/06/2020 12:36

I had about 60 lessons, passed test on third attempt! That was a long time ago, I got to love driving, so glad I learned.

Itsagrandoldteam · 29/06/2020 12:40

3 months, when I was 17. I had around 30 lessons, but I failed my first test, I passed a couple of weeks later.

Didn't have the theory test back then and it was much easier to apply for a test. Good luck.

Willowcat77 · 29/06/2020 12:44

4 years. Three driving driving instructors, three tests and thousands of pounds 😬 I have dyspraxia so it was a huge challenge.

It was worth it though because it meant I could move to the countryside 🙂

Yeahyeah9 · 29/06/2020 12:45

20 lessons and 1 test. i think that was maybe 3-4months

Linguistically · 29/06/2020 12:46

It took me almost a year with a lesson most weeks and a change of instructor in between. The more lessons you can get a week, the quicker you'll learn - I found that one lesson a week wasn't enough for me but it was all I could get. Don't give up, as much as I hated learning to drive it's one of the best things I've done for myself.

WingBingo · 29/06/2020 12:49

I learnt when I was 30.

Started in January, passed in June. I had double lessons most weeks though.

itbemay1 · 29/06/2020 12:49

Took me around 9 months and passed 3rd time! With 1 lesson a week

DD took 4 months and passed 1st time with 2 lessons a week
