Do we think it's broken?

I stubbed my ring finger (non dominant hand) on a weighted ball whilst exercising yesterday. It hurt like an absolute bastard when I did it but the pain receded when I iced it.

I strapped it up for the evening but took that off when I went to bed.

It's stiff this morning, and still some pain there but I'm not in agony - I'm just aware of it. There's a touch of swelling and a bit of a bruise. It didn't wake me in the night.

What do we reckon? I don't really want to waste the hospitals time unless it's really worth an x ray.

Can you move it?

HeyHeyWhatever · 29/06/2020 10:09

@Bringmewineandcake yeah, I can move it backwards and forwards, but can't bend it all the way. Not even 50%

Probably cant bend it due to the swelling, it doesn't sound broken but to be fair i am not a medic

Yeah, I'm thinking it would hurt much more if it was broken. It's more of a constant, dull ache.

I may just strap it up again and give it the chance to rest a bit.

Ice, rest and review , take care

Have you got a local minor injuries unit? DS broke his finger when a gate swung back. He had to have it x-rayed, strapped and was referred for specialist physiotherapy.

I understand you not wanting to waste resources but I'd get it checked out.

It sounds more like a staved finger to me. Especially if the ball hit your fingertip. This happened to me once with a netball. Finger bruised quite badly and a little swollen but it was fine after a while.

If it is broken but not displaced all they are likely to do is strap it to the next finger. I would try that and see how it goes for a day or two. If it's improving then fine. If it is getting worse then minor injuries or a&e

When I broke my foot apart from the initial wave of agony (and nausea, bizarrely) it didn't actually hurt much unless I put my full weight on it. It was a dull ache if anything, much like you describe OP. It bruised up like a bastard however. And I could still wiggle my toes, albeit only a little bit (I couldn't bend them fully and I still can't, 5 years on).

I walked around on it for 2 days before the bruising got me a bit worried and I went to minor injuries. I ended up being in plaster from ankle to knees for 8 weeks!

I'd go along to minor injuries if you can.
