Maternity Redundancy

Has anyone been made redundant before you were about to take maternity leave? Or during your maternity leave?
If so, how did it work? How much notice were you given and did you take further action?

Why would you take further action? Its not actually illegal to make some pregnant/on mat leave redundant unless that's the reason why your making them redundant. My work have just laid off 7 staff including one about to start mat leave and she was given 1 month like the rest of us

I was made redundant during maternity leave but the company shut down so really nothing anyone could do about it. Technically I wasn't actually redundant until my maternity leave officially finished. No one was given any notice they were all just sent home one Wednesday afternoon. So obviously my experience is different to most people's but it drove me mental listening to the armchair legal experts who were telling me I needed to be given this that and the other from HR when there was no HR.

Yes, while on maternity leave about 2 months ago I received a letter. I had about 2 months left so they were kind enough to pay me for the remaining maternity months but then that was the end of it. So I don’t have my job waiting for me like I originally thought I would. But they did all they could and that’s it really

Thanks all. I work for a global bank, and know that they would want my mat cover to come in at one level up than me, they would only be able to replace me with someone of my grade, so am concerned their only way around this would be to make me redundant.
In a roundabout way, the redundancy would be because I am pregnant, that's why I wanted to know if anyone had ever taken this further, and if I have a legal leg to stand on.

They would be able to offer a higher salary for the mat cover as its short term, precarious employment, so they could argue they needed to sweeten the deal to get someone.

It doesn't work like in banking unfortunately, so rigid when it comes to salary. Feel like I just have to wait it out and see as impossible to find a new job when I'm pregnant. Feeling very anxious about it all Sad

I'd read this. Could be discrimination if the fact you are pregnant is a reason for redundancy. You have more protection on maternity leave and should be offered a suitable alternativevacancy, if one exists, as soon as your post is at risk of redundancy.
