Any spiderologists around that can explain this spider behaviour?

We have a little house spider that lives in the kitchen. He will probably grow up to be one of those terrifying big scampering ones and therefore will sadly have to eventually die by my husband’s hand, but for the moment he is OK. He lives under a step in the kitchen next to the dog food. He spends absolutely all day standing stock still next to his little hole. Occasionally he is it there and I have seen him dart into his hole so if he’s not there I know where he is, but otherwise he just there all day, and all night for all I know.

Questions

  1. what is he doing?

  2. there was a dead fly on the floor near him last night. I left it, for science. This morning it was not there. Did he eat it?

  3. How does he get enough to eat?
    And drink?

Just find it a little..... odd? That he sits there all day just a few centimetres from the kids running about, husband, me, dog, and he’s just sitting there in the middle of everything not moving?

He's sitting there stock still waiting for something to fly into his web then he can nip out kill it and eat it. I think spiders wrap them up first.

AnneBullen · 28/06/2020 23:21

This is my hobby now. I used to go out and stuff.

FaceOfASpink · 28/06/2020 23:22

What's his name?Grin

JuniorMumto1 · 28/06/2020 23:22

He's definitely already big enough for me to get the hoover out.

AnneBullen · 28/06/2020 23:22

There’s no web that I can see.

You don’t think it’s odd? A spider just sitting on the floor in a high traffic area never moving?

It's definitely him? And not just a cast he's shed?

thaegumathteth · 28/06/2020 23:28

Also pls don't kill him ever even when he's huge and terrifying. Tell him it's time he moved out for sure but don't kill him.

RaininSummer · 28/06/2020 23:28

I like your lockdown hobby. I am going to find myself a little spider.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 28/06/2020 23:28

Just ask him and he'll semaphore the answer with his legs Smile

Ghostlyportrait · 28/06/2020 23:28

He’s conserving energy by staying still because he might have to wait a long time for insects to fly into his web. He have eaten that fly and that will keep him fed for a while. It is odd that he’s out in the open as usually they like to hide under or behind things to avoid becoming prey. Don’t kill him. He should be your new pet. He needs a name.

dogwithmohican · 28/06/2020 23:28

I don't have any explanation for his/her behaviour.

I used to have a spider who lived in a hole in the grout between some bathroom tiles. Eventually, I filled the hole - hopefully, he was out and about when I did.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 28/06/2020 23:29

Oh no - don't get your husband to kill it, no matter how big it gets! I'll have it! Loads in my house, all welcome. There is a big seven legged one in my bathroom - Septimus is his name 'cos of only having seven legs! Have also got woodlice, violet ground beetles, earwigs and a shrew, which lives in the kitchen behind a unit, and puts in an occasional appearance. All very welcome - it is their home too!

AnneBullen · 28/06/2020 23:30

Def him. He wasn’t there for a bit this afternoon which is the moment I said to the kids about his existence and we all trooped over and he wasn’t there. But he came back later and we all saw him. He goes when I hoover.

We have one too called Jon the spider 😂 (named by dd)
He sits in the kitchen next to the radiator and rarely moves.
We have become quite fond of him.

Gingernaut · 28/06/2020 23:32

Keeping stock still is an energy conservation move.

If he/she doesn't have an obvious web, it may be a spider that pounces on prey, rather than trapping them in webs.

AnneBullen · 28/06/2020 23:32

I’m afraid if he runs across the floor in view then the dog will eat him and/or I will freak a make husband take him to the end of the garden. Boundaries. If he stays there then he can live.

Some spiders are wolf spiders. They hide in holes and sort of pounce on their prey.

Isthisfinallyit · 28/06/2020 23:32

Sebastien is a good name for a spider.

Just a warning: DH told me to leave the spider in our utility room alone, which I did until one day I walked in and she was there, very happily sitting amongst her 1000 babies. DH got the hoover that day...

TheSparklyPussycat · 28/06/2020 23:35

Fans of The Who (shows age) he would have to be called Boris...

Changeusernameeachpost · 28/06/2020 23:37

I like this thread. It's got me to thinking about our pet spider, I've not seen him for a while. His name is fred and lives behind the bath panel . Seen little baby ones but not fred 😪

thaegumathteth · 28/06/2020 23:37

Please don't call him Boris. It's an insult.

dogwithmohican · 28/06/2020 23:38

This is a good link for identifying your spider
