How often do you dc lose/break/forget their glasses?

And what the beejeezus can you or do you do about it?

Ds just turned 11 was prescribed glasses to wear 'as much as possible' in January. They're to correct a squint rather than to correct long or short sightedness, so he can see what he needs to see without them.

He started off pretty well, but he has often left his glasses at school. Not too much of a problem in primary (and obviously not over lock down), as I can march him back in or go into the next day, but I have no idea how he will manage secondary.

He has also broken 4 pairs of frames by putting them on his bed/chair and then sitting on them. Two of these were this weekend fgs. He's under a specialist optometrist, so it's a long trek to get them mended and it's frankly embarrassing.

Is this within 'normal' range of 11 year olds? And how can I get him to take some responsibility? I know he's not doing this deliberately, but it's driving me potty at the moment.

My son has worn glasses since he was 3, he never broke any. He also slept in them, and again they were never broken [ tried for many years to remove them when he was asleep, but he would just put them back on, so gave up ]

I hear you, OP.

My ds has specs. And ASD and Dyslexia / cognitive processing issues.

He gets through a pair a month I guess?

Has been known to get off the (public) 'school' bus without his shoes too. Phone has ended up in bus garage 50 miles away many times.

It's very wearing (and expensive) but more so for him as he is frustrated and embarrassed about it himself. He is 16 this year.

I've worn glasses since I was seven and I've never lost or broken a pair - though my mum did lose a pair of my glasses once!

We were on a long car journey and I gave them to her to keep safe while I slept in the back. She put them on her lap for the drive. We then had an accident and she stood up to get out of the car and my glasses must have fallen on the floor. About 100 miles later I asked for my glasses back and she had a right panic Grin

Luckily we were on our way back home where I could get my spare pair!

My daughter lost or broke countless pairs when she was young. As a result, I only let her chose NHS frames. When she was older and wanted slightly funkier ones I said she needed to prove she could look after a pair for a decent amount of time before I’d stump up for more trendy glasses. To be fair, once she was in senior school she improved no end and your DS maybe the same. Apart from wanting to look better, they also get used to being more organised at senior school, so I would expect to see an improvement in about a year.

Actually, I have to ‘fess up and say perhaps the apple didn’t fall far from the tree as I lost one pair and broke one pair myself last year - at £200 a pop!

Tomato glasses are virtually indestructible. Ds has tried many, many times to break his glasses and hasnt yet succeeded.

Specsavers do them but you have to order the frames in. They're about £130 for the frames but it was worth it in the time alone having to trek to and from the opticians on a weekly basis. Where I am on first name terms with the staff ffs

Both mine have glasses, as do DH and I.
DH loses his glasses and keys All. The. Time.
Neither DD has lost their glasses, yet, but dyslexic DD1 will be the first I'm certain. Her organisation skills are not great. And neither need them all the time.

I've sat on a pair of my own and broken them and I once had to go to work in sunglasses as I couldn't find my ordinary ones. They turned up next day.

In fact given mine and DH track record it's amazing the DC haven't had any losses or breakages yet!

I've just remembered we did have a pair break as well, but I think that was a design fault.
