Present ideas for 5 year old boy

DS2 is 5 at the end of July. I am at a complete loss as to what to buy him and what to ask relative for, and he doesn’t seem to have any ideas. He is quite young for his age, but starting school in September. He already has a bike, a scooter, Magformers and we have lots of Lego and Playmobil, although will probably get him another set of the latter.

He currently loves playing with Lego, Kapla blocks, Schleich dinosaurs (of which we have plenty) and Playmobil.

TIA

Ooh, watching for ideas as DD is 5 at the end of July too. So far we have got Lego and Aquabeads for her. Books are always good I think, we've got couple of story books and some of the Julia Donaldson early reader ones, the songbirds series.

Does he like dressing up? DD has a doctors set which she loves.

Galt do a good range of science kits for 5-6 year olds with different themes (space, the body, slime for example). They also do craft type sets, does he like painting or making things?

Another vote for the galt science kits, they're fab although they do need a lot of help with them at that age.

The 'Look inside' books are good and the right levels. They're not as complicated as the 'See inside' series which is aimed at older ones.

Chapter books to read to him in the evenings.

Board games eg Dobble, Uno etc. We have one called 'Outfoxed' which dd5 loves. She can also play some 'grown up games' like Carcassonne and Sushi Go with slightly modified rules.

I've just ordered 'No stress chess' to teach her how to play chess.

Thanks everyone, there are some great ideas here. I had forgotten about the Look Inside books, but some of those are definitely going on the list. I’ll also look at the simple science sets. My older one has some big sets and they both enjoy those, so the little one might like some of his own.

I've a 5 and 6 year old boy and they love anything hot wheels, imaginext batcave, Lego, magic tracks, football and action figures (little wrestlers and turtles and farm figures etc)

Also art stuff - coloured card, lollipop sticks pompoms etc and they make things with cardboard

Paint sticks are brilliant (Smyths and argos have them) they use them everyday

sitckmansladylove · 28/06/2020 12:46

Also slime and play doh are still big hits!

Radio control car (Mine loved his Toy Story one, which was easy to drive)
Marble run
Floor puzzle
Novie robot
Kid Knex
Meccano Junior
Robo Alive T Rex
Kinetic Dirt

Equimum · 28/06/2020 14:55

Thanks again.

Ooh, kinetic dirt will be right up his street. I’d never heard of that before, but he’ll love it! I might invest in some paint sticks for him as well. He loves painting but I’m a bit put off by the mess, so they’d go down very well.

Mine really likes Hama beads. Crafts all sorts of of those. He also likes oil pastels and blending the colours out in his art work. If you don't want the mess of paint, watercolor pencils are great. The colour like pencils but then with a damp paint brush they can be blended out like water colours. Again, my boys love them.

DM did a big box of random craft supplies that went down very well. Forbidden Island (cooperative game) is meant for older children but DS2 (4) adores playing.

Equimum · 28/06/2020 15:28

Thanks again.
We did a big craft box last year, but it might definitely be something to repeat, and some watercolour pencils sound like a great addition to that.

Stomp rocket! They are brilliant and it tires them out beautifully Grin Our DC love theirs. I now buy the refill packs as stocking fillers!

Orchard Toys games
Football goal
Zoo/local attraction annual pass
Nerf gun
Gross science kit

I normally look at wickeduncle.co.uk when buying for nieces and nephews. You can filter toys by gender and age. They are normally generic toys as opposed to brands but give me a good idea of what is appropriate for the age range.
