Cat likes to sit on upstairs window ledge

If I leave my bedroom window open she likes to go and sit on the outside ledge
She isn't the most sensible cat and I'm afraid she may jump. I keep her in at night to limit killing but would like to have my window open as it's so hot
Is she likely to jump? It's too high, she wouldn't survive

Yes, two of ours have gone out of the upstairs window before we could stop them. Fortunately there's a bay window underneath which they almost ski down then plop the last bit to the lawn (garden is on a hill so it's not very far). One even did it twice but he really wasn't blessed with intelligence...

RedCatBlueCat · 27/06/2020 10:06

Following.
Ours like to do similar. We now open both windows, because previously they would go through the open window, and sit on the ledge with glass between them and the room, iyswim. We contemplated mesh, but weren't convinced. Lots of people do use them to keep cats in tho.

skijumpingcat · 27/06/2020 10:07

I think you're going to have to either just latch the window open or create some kind of fly screen to stop them. Sorry.

When I was a child we had a cat who died from falling off a window ledge. She was stretched out asleep and rolled over... 😢

ProtectAll · 27/06/2020 10:11

This is my fear, front of the house the lounge has a bay window so there is a sloping roof, adventurous cat has been on there, and still goes out one window along the ledge to the other. Lumpy cat likes to sit hanging over the ledge.

However the back windows are all single openings with a straight drop to the patio and garden table, if they went out if these they may use all of their 9 lives in one go. I am frequently telling the D.C. to close their doors or keep the windows on the latch as I don’t trust the cats at all.

This is the best solution I've found:

She might jump, my friend’s did and ended up with injuries needing vet treatment. I got catproof window screens which worked brilliantly at keeping my late kitty in and bugs out from Flat Cats.

PoopyPanda · 27/06/2020 10:14

Ha, @RuddyP 😹

slipperywhensparticus · 27/06/2020 10:16

I had a cat who liked to walk from one end of the windowsill to the other on the outside via the open windows fat cat decided to try it and slipped fortunately he landed in the plants little shit waited for me to go down and get him

I didn't open the upstairs windows again for the 8 years we lived there

romdowa · 27/06/2020 10:23

My cat does this too. We either just keep the bottom window closed or hunt him in every time . If we cant watch him then we close the room door.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 27/06/2020 10:26

Cats are fuckers, basically. But they need to be high up so I am not sure I would try to stop them.

RandomMess · 27/06/2020 10:29

Yep cats are dicks, mine went out the velux window and then up and over the ridge to the other side of the house that is 3 stories high Angry

He got unceremoniously dragged back in through the velux and was most put out.

Neverendingweeds · 27/06/2020 10:32

Some cats are fine with sitting on a window ledge, I see it all the time - they just sit happily with no issues.

Some cats, like mine - not a chance would I let them do it - they would jump out the window as they are pretty stupid. So this means even when it's hot, our windows can't be more than lock open!!

We have a couple of "flat cat" window and door shields which work well, but they are only held up with Velcro so a big enough cat could barge their way through!

Pelleas · 27/06/2020 10:33

I'm reminded of the fun morning we spent 20 years ago when my sister's new kitten got out onto her bedroom window ledge - her trying to coax him back through the window, everyone else under the window with a sheet to catch him in case he fell. Fortunately after parading back and forth along the bay without a care in the world he came back in, but it was a lesson learned - upstairs windows closed or on tight latch, always!

Littlebyerockerboo · 27/06/2020 10:35

We had a cat that did this too.
Never jumped, just sat.

sunshinesupermum · 27/06/2020 10:38

Agree with RuddyP Our curious Gertie loves to watch out of the window and flatcats was the only solution to us worrying if she would jump/fall out.

labazsisgoingmad · 27/06/2020 10:57

probably daft idea but i was just thinking can you put some sort of net underneath sticking out a bit so if he slipped/fell/jumped hed land in the net bit like at the circus for the tightrope walkers?

GreenMintTeaMug · 27/06/2020 11:14

I was going to suggest flat cats also. :)

Plornish · 27/06/2020 11:16

My cat appeared outside my bedroom window a few weeks ago (still not sure exactly how he got up). I opened one of the panes to let him in. As he was turning round on the windowsill to enter, he slipped off. He landed feet first, completely unscathed. The same happened when DM, many years ago, accidentally pushed a cat of ours off a bedroom windowsill (DB was watching TV in room below, saw cat sailing past, land, shake himself with a confused look, and walk off). In both cases, the cat landed on concrete, not grass.

Rockbird · 27/06/2020 11:17

Yep mine too. The back window he can jump onto next door's flat roof but the front is just a drop although we do have a bay. Will have to look at flat cats too.

NeonK · 27/06/2020 11:28

My last cat used to frequently appear on my upstairs bedroom window ledge at 5.00am wanting in. And stand there meaning I couldn't open it or I'd push him off. I'm fairly sure my neighbours across the road saw me one morning gesticulating wildly at the cat to MOVE ALONG A BIT so I could open the window. Was always scared he'd fall.
Semi detached house. Still have no idea how he got up there. I assume via tree in neighbours garden then over their roof then... 🤷🏼‍♀️

ThousandsAreSailing · 27/06/2020 12:28

Flatcats looks good. Unil then I'll keep the window almost closed
Do far I've coaxed her back with dreamies when she has got out. She does just sit but once she sees a bird I fear she will lose her head especially when I have her locked in. She hates being locked in at night but we have practically no deaths if she is in overnight

Our cat used to do this - Scared the life out of me when I first saw her there. I couldn’t stop her as I couldn’t keep the windows forever shut and she seemed to just enjoy sitting still there, but then I saw her get a distracted a few times by a bird/cat/leaf Hmm and had a few near misses. After that I brought some window safety latches that allowed me to have the window open enough but she could push it further open or fit through the gap! Now she sits on the windowsill upstairs!
