How much exercise do you do?

I am soon to be 37 and do no exercise. I’m a few lbs overweight and go through phases with exercise but in general, normal for me is none. My job is physical but not in an exercise replacement sort of way.

For me any exercise I do goes hand in hand with trying to eat better etc, so quite stop start. DP on the other hand always takes regular exercise, and so do his circle of friends.

It got me wondering how common it is at my age for people to do no exercise outside of normal day to day life such as running around after children and walking into town etc.

I’m 39. I exercise daily. It’s a priority for me and has been for the last 5 years or so (I lost 3 stone in 2015-2016).

I have primary aged children who are sporty. We ran together every day during lockdown.

We don’t have time for that now we’re back at work/school. So we run at weekends and I do a YouTube workout every day before work. It might be cardio, weights, HIIT, Pilates or yoga depending on how energetic I’m feeling - but I always do something. I try and get a brisk walk in during my lunch break too. Just 15 minutes can make a difference.

I really recommend YouTube for easing yourself back into fitness. You can do it in the privacy of your living room and there’s always something you fancy. If you want ‘20 minutes beginners Pilates’ just type it in and take your pick! I have my favourites but try to do at least one new video a week so my routine doesn’t get stale.

I used to be super active but the last few years have only been doing walking.

Bc of corona I started doing YouTube workouts (popsugar fitness) and it's really be nice to get some muscle building. I recommend it!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/06/2020 06:55

I started exercising around 4 years ago, I was unfit and overweight and I realised that at some point over the years, everyone had started exercising regularly.

Pre-lockdown I was struggling to make time for it, but I have been making a bit effort to get out for walks and so classes at home.

I mostly do bodypump for strength and body combat for cardio and am trying to do a bit of fast walking each day to make sure I get some fresh air and to compensate for current sedentary home working life. I go through phases of trying couch to 5K, but haven't got very far for one reason and another.

I don't love exercise, but I always feel better after I've done it, so during lockdown I've started putting sessions in the family diary so it becomes something that just needs to be done!

2 hour walk with the dog every day.

katherine332 · 27/06/2020 07:08

I workout pretty much everyday. I love cycling, Walking and running usually the outdoor stuff. Im not really into weight lifting kind of workout. Just physical activities to keep me active and fit. Im in my early 30s.

firstimemamma · 27/06/2020 07:20

C25K so 3 runs a week. Once I've completed the programme I'll reduce it to 2 runs a week just to maintain my fitness as I have zero interest in being able to run any further!

Also sahm to a toddler so lots of exercise in my daily life - playing with ds, all food shopping is done on foot with toddler in buggy, housework etc.

Still half a stone bloody heavier than I was at the start of lockdown though!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 27/06/2020 07:24

Depending on how much time l have spare, l usually do a proper session 4/5 times a week - either running/swimming/cycling and weights maybe twice a week. If not an actual workout, l will try and go for a walk at the very least. Don't just do it for physical health, it really does lift your mood. During lockdown, l have become Joe Wicks's number q fan for trying to promote this idea to kids!

speakout · 27/06/2020 07:25

I think it is very common to do no exercise.

I am nearly 60, I usually do 4 classes a week at the gym- body pump and yoga.
Since lockdown I have been doing an hour of yoga every morning- power/vinyasa.

devildeepbluesea · 27/06/2020 07:30

I'm 47, a couple of stone overweight but I do lots of exercise and, on the whole, carry my extra weight well. I'm very muscular so probably less fat than I think, but there's no doubt I still need to lose a bit.
I would do more but DD is still young so I'm limited when she's with me.
I do at least a couple of hours each day, a varying combo of weights, HIIT, walking, cycling, yoga. Les Mills Online has been a godsend.

sarahc336 · 27/06/2020 07:32

I aim for at least 4 times a week, mixture of running, hiit and weights or yoga which is surprisingly hard Grin

HelpMeh · 27/06/2020 07:34

I'm mid 30's and run 5-6 times a week. I need to add in more strength training but can't be bothered at the moment.

I don't enjoy exercise but I enjoy being overweight less. Having lost over three stone and put half of it back on, I'm determined to get back down to where I was and remain there. Once you get into a routine it's not that onerous.

Hyperion100 · 27/06/2020 07:43

Im 40 and do 3 heavy weights sessions per week.

Simple stuff...mainly....Squat, deadlift, bench press, chins ups, rows, and overhead press.

I do pretty much zero cardio though apart from walking.

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 27/06/2020 07:48

Lots 60 mins Spin every day, I alternate a 5km run and a joe wicks Hitt session and yoga.

Also walk a lot. Usually about an hour a day.

MysweetAudrina · 27/06/2020 07:49
  1. I do an hours yoga every morning and then whatever else I can fit in. My body loves yoga and I very rarely miss a class.
OhioOhioOhio · 27/06/2020 07:55

Wearywithteens

Omg you've nailed it.

MotherMorph · 27/06/2020 07:59

I run about 4 times a week (anything between 3m and 12m) and occassionally do HIIT classes from youtube. Teen Dd (who generally hates exercise) asked me last week if I will join her on a 2 week fitness plan she has seen (presumably on instagram) , starting Monday. I agreed but the closer monday comes, the more shes trying to talk herself out of it!

ChasingRainbows19 · 27/06/2020 08:03

I work 12.5 hour shifts 3/4 times a week. I'm pretty active in work lots of moving around walking etc.

On my days off I go for walks with my partner weather permitting. I also do home workouts I do mix it up as my body gets used to one type. So currently yoga about 30 mins every day off usually morning. Weight resistance bands 20 mins couple times a week. I'm thinking of adding something cardio but fun ( at home) I'm certainly not a runner and I can't swim atm.

I have a spin bike but I struggle in summer as it gets too hot.

I took up exercise again in 2010 I was 30 and I haven't stopped. It started with swimming and has progressed over the years and I've mixed it up. I've found you need to find what you enjoy then it's not a chore! I don't beat myself up if I miss it but I find because I do what I enjoy I actually want to do it. Always feel better for it too.

TooGood2BeTrue · 27/06/2020 08:13

I normally do 30-45 minutes of strenuous exercise (such as HIIT) a day. Sometimes I skip it when we go on a family hike or I'm cleaning the whole house. I swear that I get fewer colds and sleep better when I exercise regularly.

JustaScratch · 27/06/2020 08:15

Not very much but am getting better.
I do a 45 minute dog walk a day; two strength training sessions a week and a bike ride/longer walk at the weekend. We also have a pool so I'm trying to do 100 lengths a week (split over different days).

I'm just getting back into it after a down period and hoping to increase. I have a sedentary job.

PatchworkElmer · 27/06/2020 08:23

I’m 32. Currently running 30-40k a week, plus a couple of weights sessions, a couple of pilates sessions, and maybe a long walk of 8-10k.

When the gyms are open, I normally do a spin or rebound class instead of running. I do one session of HIIT a week, too.

BasinHaircut · 27/06/2020 08:26

OP don’t bother with the little trampoline thing. It’s a laugh but it’s not going to get you any results.

A lot of exercise classes are just a way of getting you sweaty so you feel like you are achieving something, but the way to get results really are through strength or resistance training, I.e. weights.

Body pump is good as a starter and that’s what got me into weights, but as it’s essentially a cardio class you do need to progress to the gym floor eventually.

Also yoga makes you strong and complements weight training very well as it counteracts the contraction in your muscles. I started yoga for flexibility reasons (to assist my deadlift form primarily) but it’s also great for mental health.

For me it’s 2 x weight training sessions (with a semi personal trainer, I double up with a friend) and 2 x yoga sessions. I do also like the occasional spin class and do one most weeks but that’s pretty much all the cardio I do.

Reedwarbler · 27/06/2020 08:35

I am 65. I walk my dog for around an hour a day and do all my own gardening and housework. I also used to do two exercise classes a week before the current situation. I was a very fit and sporty person as a child/young adult, but have had four operations on my knees (sports injuries) over the years so have to be a bit careful with them now due to osteoarthritis. I can't run for example. I am not fit by any means, but I am never sure how fit I should be at 65. Am I doing enough? I don't know. My H is 67 and cycles over 100 miles a week. He's fit!

BogRollBOGOF · 27/06/2020 08:38

A lot less than normal. Months of being sedentary around the house and constantly around family and no races on the horizon have quashed my mojo and my internal motivation has collapsed.

I have got a weekly class back running. It's an open air small group fitness class. Heat and my usual running are a harder combination, and it's hard to make the quiet space for yoga.

I disagree with the pp about weights vs cardio. Weights are great. Nothing wrong with cardio either. Cardio is great for heart strength and lung capacity which weights don't really address. Doing a mix is more interesting and easier to keep going with active rest because you can swap the focus around.

Over 35, it is very much use it or lose it for most people. Normally, I do a lot of brisk functional walking, runing several times a week, yoga and a general class.

mistermagpie · 27/06/2020 08:42

I've just turned 40 and have three children under five. I run every other day, not loads, about 4-6 miles a time. Then I attempt a YouTube workout while the baby is napping a couple of times a week as well. I would do way more than that if it wasn't for the kids and having no time but I love exercise!

My DH also runs so we support each other to do that.

mistermagpie · 27/06/2020 08:42

I've never been inside a gym btw!
