Exercise help for a total beginner

I currently do nothing. Working at home and do no activity at all. I used to run but got fed up with injuries. Got tendonitis in my right foot a couple of months ago which is now better although I started to get overwhelming pain in my toe today. Just for a second then goes off!

So I need to do something that isnt running. I have a 4kg kettle bell. I have a rowing machine and cross trainer. Interested to try yoga or pilates, I have before and just found them impossible.

Anyone able to offer any support or tips?

Hiya
I do quite a lot of exercise through the day.
I start in the morning with a 5 min stretch routine. Look them up online, pick one, try it, get used to it and use it. It makes a massive difference.
Then after that.....if at home I do floor exercises. On all fours, lift one leg 20 times, then the other. Same for donkey kicks. Same on my side, side leg lifts. Sets of 20 squats, different types.
At work I do sets if 20 squats every time I go to the loo. Have kept my arse in quite good nick from this although it is a bit too big.
Can do arms, planks, wall sits etc.
Have fun!

What do you want? To lose weight? Build muscle? Increase stamina? Improve flexibility?

ShowOfHands · 26/06/2020 18:08

What do you like? How long do you have? How much floor space?

A simple bodyweight routine would work. I've cobbled together a bunch of 30 day challenges - squats, planks, push ups, pull ups, burpees and core to make it into one programme covering the 30 days. It's hard but you get a really good sweat on, I'm about half way through the 30 days now and I can really tell a difference.

If you can buy yourself a pull up bar you're sorted for that. And then for your more stamina type stuff the rowing machine is perfect. You can use the kettlebell to add weight to the bodyweight stuff or start a kettlebell programme, but form is quite important for a lot of kettlebell stuff so I would be careful.

Thank you
I dont really like any of it! Got plenty of floor space. Want to lose weight and get fit!

Thank you. I haven't got anywhere to install a pull up bar but the 30 day programme sounds excellent.

I would highly recommend Joe Wicks. He has all sorts of workouts on his YouTube channel from 6 mins to 30 plus. I do a mixed of the full body work out for seniors and the PE with Joe. No equipment needed just body weight.

Ratbagratty · 26/06/2020 18:56

Look for 15 minute mile on YouTube. Is low intensity walking work out, can build up to the bigger ones. I've been doing it for less than a week and some weight has already started to go. Yay!

wowfudge · 26/06/2020 19:05

If you want to lose weight that's 80% down to diet. Interval weight training and high lean protein diet together will get you results. Go for a walk every day as well. I don't run because I injured my knee running and whenever I've tried again it just goes. I can walk for miles though.

OhioOhioOhio · 26/06/2020 19:07

The 15 minute mile sounds good.

I do Yoga with Adriene which is available for free on Youtube. Currently working through her 30-day series 'Home'. I'd highly recommend it for developing core strength, and there are loads of other types and lengths of practice to choose from.

I also used to really like Jillian Michaels' workouts but I don't have a DVD player to play them any more. They might be available online though. Les Mills on demand has a free selection of videos too, I really like the barre one - so twirly Smile

MrsPhyllisTyne · 26/06/2020 19:11

Forgot to mention, OP, the 30 Day Shred is probably the best-known of Jillian Michaels' workouts, that's the one I'd recommend specifically Smile

I'd highly recommend BodyFit by Amy on YouTube. She has hundreds of videos . She does a huge variety including kettlebell, dumbbell, body weight, cardio, mix and match, Pilates , resistance bands . And she's beginner friendly as she gives you different options to work at. I've been doing daily workouts for nearly 2 months and I feel so much better and have lost nearly 10lb.

Pertella · 26/06/2020 19:34

The only thing I would say about pilates is that it's very easy to get the exercise wrong if you have no previous experience and so not gain the benefit.

I started about 6 months ago so am still a beginner myself really but it was really obvious when I was doing an leg lift (for example) without the correct body alignment to when I was placed in the right position!

Happybint · 26/06/2020 19:53

Ah that's all great thank you! Am doing diet too. Low carb.
