How friendly is your area?

I'm out in a walk (rural village so off over the hills) and have passed more than a dozen people, most of whom I don't know, some I do and some I only recognise their faces but each and everyone has smiled and said hello.
My sister came to visit last year and couldn't understand how I knew every single person I passed. I told her I didn't, we just always greet each other. Sometimes even going as far as remarking on the weather etc.

What's it like where you live? I'm in SW Scotland. Technically our 'village' is the size and population of a town so not too small really.

Very friendly. I’m in a town in NE Scotland and say hello to everyone.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 26/06/2020 14:43

I can't go anywhere without seeing someone I know and at least exchanging greetings. People say hello to strangers. When my DC were younger I used to get reports back about their behaviour (crossing the road without looking, being polite etc).

It's a very small town, quite close-knit.

verybritishproblems · 26/06/2020 14:46

SW England and like that here too. Think it’s a rural thing perhaps and it’s definitely not like that in the city.

romdowa · 26/06/2020 14:46

I actually think where I live now in the east midlands has to be the most unfriendliest place I've ever lived. Weve been here nearly 2 years and barely know a handful of people. My home town is so friendly but also too expensive for us. So for now we are kind of stuck here.

TheDogsMother · 26/06/2020 14:49

Really friendly and very social. Small hamlet in SE

danidella · 26/06/2020 14:55

I live in NW England in a small town and its very friendly here. I used to live in Yorkshire and i'm from NE Scotland. Where i lived in Yorkshire it wasn't as friendly and my hometown in Scotland was the same. Think it was due to them being a lot bigger than where i am now.

JuanitaJuanita · 26/06/2020 14:58

I'm in the north west, we greet strangers with a smile, nod or hello if passing or maybe a lengthier chit chat if we're stuck next to each other for time, in queues etc

I live in a village where it's the people you do actually know who are the problem! It's a small rural village where most people know each other, people have grown up there and still live there etc and no bad deed gets forgotten, and is often used as a stick to beat you with up to 30 years later. There's a real vigilante culture and the bitchiness and gossip are off the charts, don't even get me started on the local Facebook page! It's like a really bad comedy sketch and I'm not even exaggerating.
It's a horrible place to live and I am currently planning my escape. I'd kill to live in an anonymous bigger town. It sounds like bliss!

howtotellsomeone · 26/06/2020 15:00

catface you must be near me ... I’m NE coast village - know pretty much everyone here by name ... a lot of us related too via marriage . Very quiet, calm and peaceful place .

LockdownLoppy · 26/06/2020 15:07

Very friendly - South West Wales.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 26/06/2020 15:13

I live somewhere that’s often said to be really friendly, but I don’t believe it to be true. I’m sure it’s very friendly indeed if you are from here, but quite the opposite if you’re not. All my friends locally are also not from here, and have found the local population similarly unfriendly.

Viragoesque · 26/06/2020 15:15

That was also my experience of a large, popular East Midlands village, @romdowa, and I've lived all over the world. I stayed seven years, having arrived with a small child and done all the right things like attending (and eventually running) baby groups, volunteering, having DS in the village school -- it was just incredibly insular, and our faces didn't fit.

I moved to another country earlier this year and, despite lockdown, I think I've made more genuine friends/potential friends already than in my entire time in my East Midlands village!

Camomila · 26/06/2020 15:17

Brighton, very friendly. I grew up here but DH also finds it friendly.

spikyplants · 26/06/2020 15:18

Town in West Yorkshire. Been here 7 years. Not hostile but not friendly as I'm not a local. Full of big family groups who only seem to bother/socialise with each other. I'm quiet, introverted and have no family left back home (all dead) so feel very isolated. Paradoxically I'd love to live somewhere mega isolated. Smile

romdowa · 26/06/2020 15:26

@viragoesque we are in between two big cities and it's quite a big place. I've never come across people so unfriendly, nobody says hello or even excuse me when they walk straight into you. A group of grown men and women removed myself and oh from the local pokemon go group because we wouldn't go out playing in the rain and cold 😂😂 We where planning on moving down south nearer to where oh is from but sadly coivd put a spanner in that 🙄🙄 so for now we are stuck here.

EstherLittle · 26/06/2020 15:34

I live in North London and our street has a real mix of families, students and older people. People do come and go but there’s a core of us who have a WhatsApp group and we swap plants and excess food, stuff like that. So that aspect is nice and friendly.

CMOTDibbler · 26/06/2020 15:40

I live in a very small town, and it is very friendly. We chat with all sorts of people, and virtually everyone smiles and says hello

Dicotyledon · 26/06/2020 18:05

West Midlands. Reasonably friendly, especially during Covid. But nothing will make me forget its nasty face which was revealed in the run up to the referendum. And those people who revealed their racism to me. I’ll not forget.

spiderlight · 26/06/2020 18:09

South Wales - mostly fairly friendly, especially if I've got the dog with me.

Nackajory · 26/06/2020 18:11

Very friendly superficially but quite tricky to develop real friendships with anyone other than those who have also moved into the area, rather than been here multiple generations

keepingbees · 26/06/2020 18:11

I'm in the East Midlands and as other posters have said I find it really unfriendly. Lived here years and haven't one friend. I'm a smile and say hello to anyone kind of person, I get looked at like I have two heads it's horrible.

Bairnsmum05 · 26/06/2020 18:14

I live in Glasgow and it's super friendly. Wherever you are, someone will chat to you and strike up a conversation. That is why I love it here!

RedRec · 26/06/2020 18:16

Calderdale, West Yorkshire. Very friendly. And I am a southerner.

poppyfieldsinmay · 26/06/2020 18:19

South Wales - massively unfriendly suburb - really hate it. Wish we had never moved here.

Bluntness100 · 26/06/2020 18:19

West Sussex, small village, everyone nods and says hello,

It’s when it starts to get bigger it doesn’t happen, else you’d not get anywhere you’d be walking around like a nodding dog.

NatalieH2220 · 26/06/2020 18:38

I'm in south east and most people say hello if out for walks near to home. It wouldn't happen if in the town centre though, I think people would find it a bit strange then.
