Is it usual in hot weather to allow dog out at night

My neighbours dog (German shepherd) had the run of the garden last night and would not stop barking.
This was past 1am

Is this normal?

It’s antisocial to let the dog bark at 1am but yesterday was too hot to take my dog out during the day; he was pacing, unsettled and drinking loads well into the evening.

If it was a one-off I’d let it go.

GabrielleChanel · 26/06/2020 10:05

I hadn't thought of that side of it, I wouldn't complain as my poor neighbour had to put up with newborn twins 6 years ago and we are quite a noisy household
Dog is I know territorial - garden is imho a bit Small for a gsd
I was just surprised that dog was out so late but that makes sense.
Also seemed louder as windows were open

Probably too hot during the day to let it out

Our dog sleeps outside in hot weather but we live rurally.

The dog being outside in your case is fine, but the barking isn’t.

MistyIsland · 26/06/2020 11:27

My dogs were still out at 2am but they are a breed which doesn’t bark, they just led on the grass sleeping, I did call them in when I went to bed. We do live rurally as well.

Barking at 1am isn’t on.

I feel your pain, GSD to one side of us, two chocolate labs the other side. They all set each other off and the GSD barks at tree branches moving in a breeze. Neighbours do nothing to sort it out, it’s apparently part of “how the breed behaves” for the GSD. Lab owner is apologetic but shrugs shoulders and says “what can I do?”.

Training, maybe, I have suggested however that is too expensive apparently.

Mine was out late. I have trained her not to bark in the garden. Very difficult when there are birds, squirrels and planes 🤨
Doesn't matter what the breed , they are intelligent animals and can be trained to behave .
Dog was an untrained nut job when we got her at 2yrs old. Year later totally different dog.
Sorry gone off track a bit there

mine was out at 10pm jumping at my hose as i watered and trying to get me to play

he had been miserable all day not being able to play with anyone...he's only a puppy and loves energetic games, but that was a no yesterday

happier today though

Springersrock · 26/06/2020 12:04

Mine has struggled with the heat the last couple of nights.

I’ve slept on the sofa and propped the back door open. She pops in and and out.

Doesn’t bark though, she’s be in with the back door closed if she did

We do have a yapper behind us. Drives me up the wall. Only have to go out in the garden and the bloody thing starts yapping. They never bring it in or shut it up either.

LochJessMonster · 26/06/2020 12:15

they should have walked it, lazy skanks I didn’t walk my dog yesterday.

It’s dangerously hot for dogs at the moment, they are uncomfy and unsettled at the moment.
It’s hard being a dog owner not being able to help cool them down. Dogs excessively pant when trying to cool down and it literally looks like they are about to have a heart attack.

If it was a one off I would let it go. If it’s happening often they I would say something.

Springersrock · 26/06/2020 12:21

I don’t think it’s anything to do with walking them

Mine has been out for a quick run at around 7am then I’ve been taking her to the beach to play in the sea at around 8pm

She was still pacing, fidgety and panting at night. It has been really hot in the house overnight this week, so I let her stay outside if she wants - provided she doesn’t bark!

bluebluezoo · 26/06/2020 12:36

My dog has been getting up at 4 am to go sit in the grass.

He doesn’t bark though. Just sits in the cool.

GabrielleChanel · 26/06/2020 14:45

Thanks for replies. It genuinely hadn't occurred to me that it was heat related
I love dogs as a rule but know I would
Be a crap dog owner so won't be getting one as don't know the first clue about how to
Look after one

I let my dogs out just before I go to bed, so occasionally out late. They are not barkers but if they scent a fox they can tear up to the end of the garden and give a few barks. But I'm out there too and call them back in.
My doors are open all day in this weather, and the dogs go in and out. But should they start barking I immediately deal with it. There's no excuse for allowing a dog to bark and bark.
