How to extend the tubing of a portable air con unit?

I’ve had enough of it being 29 degrees inside my house and I’m very tempted to go and splash on a portable air con unit. The only problem is that the tubing of these units is 1.8m at best and our crappy postage stamp size windows are at the top of the overall window, so about 1.8m high.

Does anyone have one of these units, is there any way to extend the tubes?

There are lots of extension kits available. I got one like this, because I wanted a narrower tube to go out the window, but there will be cheaper ones.

It doesn't cool the room as much as I hoped, but it does make a difference. Very noisy, even the 'silent' ones. And big and bulky ,plus hoses everywhere (I only needed a tiny bit of extension, so I've tried to clip the excess together a bit).

Thanks @Branbleberries. When you put the tube out of the window how do you seal off the rest of the open window? Is it a faff every time you need to close the window?

I've got a portable unit. Very handy to leave on in bedroom for few hours.

I had to extend mine by about 30cm.it is a 150mm diameter tube so I just got 150mm flexible ducting from Toolstation fitted it over the end and use cable ties to secure it.

yes I use a window sealing kit made of fabric, not sure whether it makes a difference or not but I figured it was better. The air conditioner came with a plastic one for sash windows, but mine are awning ones. It's not hard to close the window with it as the cloth is very thin and just comes inside the window

Where did you buy the fabric window covering from @Branbleberries? Smile

We put our aircin unit on a small table to lift it off of the floor and stuff the window gap with an old towel. Low tech solutions all the way here!!

I got it form amazon - there are several brands. You need velcro around the window frame. It's supposedly removable (which it was, in my test, but I haven't left it there for a whole summer, so I hope they're correct! I will likely just leave it permanently, as it's not very obtrusive (you can take the fabric bit off for the winter and just leave the velcro there). You can unzip the fabric and open the window as well for the days that you don't want it. It is a bit ugly, but not as bad as I thought - looks a bit like you have curtains hanging down a bit, or something.

A diagram would be good here ;)

Actually, the table is a better idea. You should try not to extend the vent hose too much because it gets hot and it also doesn't work as efficiently.

Branbleberries · 27/06/2020 10:46

A diagram for which bit?

Interesting that the hose extended might not be as efficient. I wondered that. I wonder if I should cut my extension hose. I really only needed a small bit, and that was just to make it a little more hidden behind my desk so that it looks a little nicer, rather than going straight to the window. but if it works less well, I am sure that I could find a way to attach the small window piece to the built in hose instead of the extended hose. The hoses and plastic venting attachments definitely do get very hot!
