Is it true that some men can't pee sitting on a toilet?

A friend is looking after an elderly relative. He says he has to pee whilst standing as he can't pee if he's sitting down. He's unsteady on his feet so needs help. Does this sound a bit dodgy? My friend is finding it very uncomfortable and is a bit suspicious.

I doubt it. Could she find a name friend to toilet him to see if he pulls the same stunt with a man?

My husband sits whilst peeing- has done for years. It IS physically possible of course, but maybe if he is used to standing, it take practice?

I used a she pee once, and really did have to concentrate on trying to wee whilst standing up. It just felt unnatural after 40yrs of sitting. Might be the same.

Wait, so if he's doing a number 2 in the same visit he needs to stand then sit?

I smell a rat

I've cared for many elderly men in my life, and yes some of them just can't pee sitting down, after a lifetime of doing it standing up.

If the sexes were reversed , I'm sure you'd find a lot of old ladies who couldn't pee standing up for the same reason.

Your friend might get him a urinal, and he could pee standing up while leaning on his bed / chair .

I don't think he is playing games - she should just hand him a urinal and tell him to get on with it.

Thanks.
It seems to be more a matter of his masculinity - he's made comments that only women sit down to pee!

The way I understand it is if he's sitting down then he needs to direct his stream downwards into the bowl. I can't see that being too difficult. I would have thought it would be less embarrassing for him and feel more independent for him to be doing it this way.

He insists of my friend helping him in the bathroom instead of his sons but she's struggling more as he's getting older.

They have some mobility aids but he's very reluctant to use them.

I'd suggest a urine bottle if he insists on doing this.

There is a possibility he's trying to maintain his independence but I'd agree with PP and see if he would do this for a male relative. Also, I don't think my father would want me to take him to the toilet (I wouldnt mind) but he definitely wouldnt want to put me in this position. So could be that reason he doesnt want sons to take him.

Is there anyone else could take over? How did your friend get involved?

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 26/06/2020 12:29

She's the partner of his youngest son. He is used to a female carer but she is no longer available. My friend had been helping with just the food shopping previously but has been caring for her parents for many years. She's finding it very different with her partner's father.

This is weird , how the heck did she end up his unofficial carer?
Regardless , she is under no obligation to do this . His family can help him .

Chungus · 26/06/2020 12:51

How far does this helping go? Is he asking her to hold it for him?

HH160bpm · 26/06/2020 12:54

Not according to this. In fact it’s better for those with enlarged prostrate which is common in elderly men.

My husband always sits down at home which I’m thankful for no cleaning pee off toilet seats or worst still the floor if his aim of off at 4am in the morning.

iklboo · 26/06/2020 13:28

Nope. DH does it in the night so he doesn't have to put the bathroom light on.

tiredanddangerous · 26/06/2020 13:32

Dh regularly sits to pee.

I think your friend needs to put her foot down. He either manages to stand on his own or he sits.

indecisiveness1 · 26/06/2020 13:40

I thought my DP was strange for doing this at times, glad he's not the only one. He does sometimes usually to prolong doing a chore.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 26/06/2020 13:41

So sitting is the optimal voiding position for urination in men with urination problems!

It's just a temporary role until his new carer can start and she did offer but is finding it more difficult than she expected. She used to just help him get to the bathroom and leave him there. She helped out in the past quite a bit.

I think she's just supporting him as he removes his penis and rearranges his clothes. I don't think she's touching his todger directly although he's not exactly doing a great job with his aim and is dripping everywhere. He seems to take forever to pee and is struggling with his balance towards the end.

My friend has now told her partner that she's not strong enough to hold him up and either he or his brothers help or he needs to sit on the toilet.

He can go on his own but tends to piss all over.

My father can't pee sitting down and couldn't use a bottle in hospital. I helped nurse my elderly uncle last year and he was the same. The relative could be trying it on or it could be genuine, either way she shouldn't be caring for him if she is uncomfortable doing so.
