school uniform choices for girls.

Teacher12345 · 25/06/2020 19:58

DD is starting school in September and there are so many choices of uniform!
I was going to get a skirt, a pinafore, and 2 trousers (but no girls in my DS class wear trousers which has me doubting this too!) and then I read the thread the other day about shorts under skirts. Now I am thinking maybe playsuits instead but I have bought her ankle boots already as shoes.
Do you think any of these would look okay with ankle boots? What do your DD's wear if they are in infants?

Our primary didn’t allow ankle boots for girls so worth checking .

The play suits look like a nightmare for going to the loo in a rush. They get engrossed in stuff and do leave it to last minute

7ofNine · 25/06/2020 20:04

How the heck is she supposed to go to the loo in a playsuit?
Undo the buttons, drop the suit on the floor in all the infant wee, use the loo, do it back up?
Not good...

7ofNine · 25/06/2020 20:04

Shoes only at our school, no boots at all.

Skirts and dresses have the big advantage of being quick to go for a wee, which is pretty important when there are exciting things to do and you are prone to leaving it to the last second to go...

Playsuits asking for trouble, skorts maybe not so much.

Pinafores good for protecting light coloured tops from the inevitable pen marks...

clare8allthepies · 25/06/2020 20:09

Is she starting reception so will be 4? I wouldn’t go for playsuits as they’re going to be tricky for a last minute rush to the loo, especially with a jumper or cardigan on top.

Both of my girls had polo shirts, Asda used to do lovely soft feeling ones and easy pull on skirts or pinafores, the jersey ones with no zips or buttons.

I got them both trousers too, especially for the winter when getting tights on and off for PE was still a bit too tricky.

We started with jersey material pinafores over polo tops. Kept the polo tops clean, warm through autumn and winter, and easier for the loo than playsuits .

We added tights or leggings on colder days.

Never put shorts under.

Buckingham1988 · 25/06/2020 20:10

Ours aren't allowed to wear playsuits or boots so I'd check first.
Also can she independently (in a hurry) undress/dress herself in them for pe/toileting.
My dd had a mixture of pinafore, skirt and trousers by ks2 it was only trousers.

Teacher12345 · 25/06/2020 20:10

Very good point about the play suits! Didn't think of that.
I did check with other parents at the school about the boots and that is fine.
So now I guess the question is, knickers or no knickers?

No playsuits. More trouble then they are worth. Pinafores easiest.

notmycar · 25/06/2020 20:12

When my DDs have started I'v got 'easy dress' dresses. Easy when they need the toilet and getting dressed after PE. Then I put a polo shirt underneath and velcro shoes. I can't think of any of the girls who wear trousers but of course that is acceptable too.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/06/2020 20:14

Why would she wear no knickers?

Teacher12345 · 25/06/2020 20:14

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

Why would she wear no knickers?
I meant shorts or no shorts to cover the knickers Blush

😂 Thank god

BikeRunSki · 25/06/2020 20:19

DD wears shorts or culottes all year round. Long socks in winter, short in summer.
She has done this since reception (now Y3). She has dabbled with dresses and the summer play suits in the summer, but always goes back to shorts.

Minesateaorthree · 25/06/2020 20:48

Pinafores that are long enough (and probably have a pleat sewn in) for when your daughter sits crossed legged on the carpet then her knickers aren't on show. Don't worry then about shorts. Many clothing companies seem to think that all little girls from 4 and up need extra short skirts, which is ridiculous! Tights or trousers (helpful for Pe days) for winter.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/06/2020 20:51

Why does she need shorts to cover knickers?

Stompythedinosaur · 25/06/2020 20:52

In honesty, I'd have a look at any photos of what other kids wear and go with that. My dc1 had preferred leggings before school so we started out getting her trousers, and she very quickly wanted to be dressed like the other girls in a dress.

We found the jersey material pinafores to be comfy and practical in the younger years.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/06/2020 20:52

And we never bothered with shorts.

Teacher12345 · 25/06/2020 20:55

@Minesateaorthree apparently girls knickers are too flimsy and perverts will take advantage of this when the kids are doing cartwheels of sitting cross legged.

I think I might just get boxer shorts for her instead of knickers for school.

My DD (reception) wears skorts in the summer, playsuits and trousers. Sorry to say but wearing dresses at this age (or skirts) is a hindrance for running, climbing etc. She asked for a dress once, wore it once, never asked for it again. The skorts are great - look like a skirt but are shorts.

AdriannaP · 25/06/2020 21:04

@Teacher12345 at our school children also sit on floor a lot with crossed legs.

AdriannaP · 25/06/2020 21:07

Meant she wears trousers in the winter, skorts and playsuit in the summer. As others have said she struggles with playsuit when going to the toilet so not great for that age group:

Teacher12345 · 25/06/2020 21:21

@AdriannaP she isn't a massive fan of trousers and not a single girl in my sons year wear trousers. I haven't noticed other kids in the school though. I have found some nice collottes on Morrisons website I think I will get some.

Trousers or skirt with shorts or leggings/tights underneath. Its not just sitting cross legged and doing cart wheels, its hanging upside down on the play equipment.
