Just bought a Mr Whippy 99 cone with a flake for DC at the park this afternoon from the icecream van... £3 each!!!

Is it that expensive everywhere, or was I being mugged off?

OP posts:
Housewife71 · 25/06/2020 19:41

£3.00 Central Scotland

AngeloMysterioso · 25/06/2020 19:42

£2.80, from the ice cream van with flake, no sauce.

Weren’t they called 99ers because they were 99p once upon a time?

KipperTheFrog · 25/06/2020 19:44

£2.40 small with a flake, £2.60 large with a flake. From cafe on the sea front East Sussex.

Userengage · 25/06/2020 19:44

£1 from the van, South East England

PleasantVille · 25/06/2020 19:46

£2 from a van that's been doing a roaring trade in the past few weeks.

Why are posters commenting about with or without a flake, don't you know what a 99 is? Confused

Sweettea1 · 25/06/2020 19:48

They always up the price n parks. When van drives down street there £1.50 if out in a busy park they £3.00

dancemom · 25/06/2020 19:53

A 99 and a small tub with a flake from the van in the park cost me £6 yesterday

Karwomannghia · 25/06/2020 19:56

£2 inc flake £1.60 without or for a child’s one which is a tiny bit less ice cream. Sauce free, sprinkles 30p. From ice cream vans in a beautiful park in Sheffield.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 25/06/2020 20:00

DD asked why they were called 99s the other day and her mind was blown when I said it's because they used to be 99p

£2.40 here, 10p extra for sauce

PleasantVille · 25/06/2020 20:04

I'm getting unreasonably cross now, there is no such thing as a 99 without a flake!

How do you not know that's called a cone or cornet?

Now I'm also going to get annoyed about the posting of this obvious urban myth.

Even a second's thought would tell you that can't possibly be true, 99s have been around long before decimalisation, do you think they just happened to have been nvented just at the time that 99p would have been the right price for them Grin

Runnerduck34 · 25/06/2020 20:09

£3 in Herne Bay kent, thought that was shocking! But was really generous size and very nice !

Wishiwasrunning2 · 25/06/2020 20:11

£1 or £1.50, lovely chap come round in an ice cream van and is friendly and smiley!! 😁

DawnAnn · 25/06/2020 20:19

£2 for a double cone, with sprinkles, flake and sauce :) (North East).

Karwomannghia · 25/06/2020 20:23

I do know 99 means with a flake but it’s made exactly the same way except the 99 has the flake in. To be fair I didn’t really realise that was its proper name till recently -I thought it was ice cream in a cone with a flake. Since I found out I’ve quite enjoyed asking for 99s. It’s very efficient.
As you clearly have a touch of pedantry around ice cream labelling, is there a name to distinguish between mr whippy type ice cream and scooped ice cream with a flake? God forbid I say the wrong thing!

Yogafairy · 25/06/2020 20:27

£3.50 single cone, not a generous amount of ice cream. I nearly passed out last time the ice cream van came round!

Wilberforce1 · 25/06/2020 20:28

£2.50 in Bromley!

Oblomov20 · 25/06/2020 20:28

£2.50
Surrey

JonHammIsMyJamm · 25/06/2020 20:29

No idea. I like ice cream but I can’t remember the last time I bought from an ice cream van. It must be at least 12yrs.

Fedup21 · 25/06/2020 20:34

DD asked why they were called 99s the other day and her mind was blown when I said it's because they used to be 99p

Please tell me you were joking!!

We bought one yesterday-£1.20.

Rocaille · 25/06/2020 20:36

£2 for a small one with a flake. South West London.

LaChatte · 25/06/2020 20:37

I thought a 99 was just a cone and italian style vanilla icecream, and a flake 99 was, well, a 99 with a flake in it.

FrugiFan · 25/06/2020 20:38

£2 without a flake, £2.30 with. South coast (not Bournemouth you'll be glad to know!)

heartsonacake · 25/06/2020 20:42

99 Cones aren’t so named because they used to be 99p.

They have many potential name origins but none of them are price related.

BruceAndMarley · 25/06/2020 20:44

£1.05 here with a flake
