Thinking of applying for Uni for September. Am I mad?

I have an opportunity to go back to university in October. It's something I've wanted to do for years and I thought it was probably too late for me.
I'm unsure about it though with the virus likely not have gone anywhere by then. I don't mind distance learning at all but I'm scared I won't achieve as much as I would if I was going to physical lectures as it's all likely to be disrupted and strange.

I'm also 33 and feel a bit embarassed that I may be the oldest in the class. I've been a Sahm for a decade so the whole thing terrifies me Tbh!
Just looking for some opinions and advice really as I would need to submit an application ASAP.
Thanks!

@Beebityboo

My school was demolished and the one that was built on the site is closed due to Covid. I am just really hoping I can sort it out and have got myself in a bit of a flap about it.
I can assure you the exams officer will still be working! They will have queries like yours frequently. I used to work in a school (not exams officer) and would get an enquiry like yours a couple of times a term.

If the new school was built on the site of the old it will probably have an administrative link to the old school, especially as, given that you are only 33, the old one can have been demolished at the most 15 years ago. SIMS has been in use for 30 years so it's possible your details are still on the system. It's even possible that the exams officer may know what exam board demolished school used x years ago off the top of their head.

OP don't let that stop you, this is likely something that will be common for applicants to come up against this year and the Unis should be making allowances for that.

Ps you're not mad to be applying for September at all, I'm doing the same. Was told last month the course was closed to applications but the situation may change due to covid, have heard some students are deferring to 2021. I'm 40 and it's my second degree. Good luck to you!

I have sent my application off this morning. I listed all the GCSES I could remember and emailed admissions to explain the reason some have been omitted. Now just have to wait and see!

Well done! Fingers crossed for you!

BoneyEm1972 · 29/06/2020 12:26

Well done! I’ve just completed the first year of a history degree and I’m 47 so you’re young compared to me Smile I’ve loved it and can’t wait to go back !! Hopefully you will hear good news soon Smile

Beebityboo · 29/06/2020 12:30

Thank you. I have better A Levels than they are asking for on the entry requirements but weak GCSES. I tried my best on my personal statement, so hoping for the best!

ahh, good luck to you! i studied history at uni and i loved it. it was also a very popular course with mature students - the oldest on the course was a lovely man in his late sixties!

keepingbees · 29/06/2020 12:57

I was going to say go for it but I see you have now so good luck!!

Probably a good time to apply tbh as there might be less competition for places.
I've also been a sahm for a decade and my uni wants evidence of recent study and to have been in education in the last 5 years so I'm screwed.

Borisplums · 29/06/2020 13:15

I did my first degree with grade D and E GCSEs! They didn’t care. It was my A Levels that mattered to them.

SmileSmile good luck!

LizzyAnna99 · 29/06/2020 17:25

I just graduated college last month and the oldest person in my class was 42, old enough to be my dad! go to uni!! I’m going in September with a 6 week old baby, if you’re mad then I am too 🤣

Update, I got an unconditional offer this morning. Really mixed feelings to be honest. I'm vulnerable to Coronavirus and with three children back in school I'm sure self isolation will be a constant threat affecting my attendance. Just don't know what to do!

Congratulations!

Please don’t worry about Covid-related attendance issues. Universities know this will be an issue for many. It’s likely that your university will have most of their classes either online or a mix of online/in person for the first semester. It’s a time of increased flexibility and everyone will be understanding.

InTheCludgie · 08/07/2020 15:10

Congratulations! I received my unconditional offer last week and while I'm thrilled I too have mixed feelings. We are doing online lessons until Xmas at least, you may be doing similar too OP so less exposure chance?

Springcatkin · 09/07/2020 18:58

Great news. I have a couple of offers too from my favoured universities. Just need to send evidence of my results Smile

BalloonSlayer · 10/07/2020 08:10

Congratulations! We all said it would be ok, didn't we?

Well done, and to everyone else who has also got offers. How exciting!

OP. About COVID. Universities are aware of the anxiety students feel and will be putting in all kinds of safety measures. You can always email them to ask for reassurance if you want.

I expect some of the lectures will be online which means you can play them back to your heart’s content and really get the most out of them.

Congratulations OP. I hope you really enjoy 😊 it.
