Moving to Plymouth - where should I live?

I apologise if I've posted this in the wrong place - Property/DIY didn't seem right and neither did Travel.

I've started a new job in Plymouth, but am currently working from home while based elsewhere in the UK. Once offices start to open properly, its likely that I will need to move to Plymouth to physically join the team, but I know absolutely nothing about Devon.

I'd like to live somewhere where I can see the sea from my house/flat, but older posts on Mumsnet don't speak too highly of Plymouth itself and it looks like living on the Hoe would be incredibly expensive. What areas would you recommend around that area, where I could have a sea view and a local supermarket, but would be able a commutable distance to Plymouth? I don't need a big city, but I want to be close to the water.

Also, if anyone knows - I was looking at Paignton. Is it nice there?

Thank you!

Paignton is quite far from Plymouth, expect an hour commute and more in summer.
I have lived in Plymouth for past few years and I love it. Theres far more going on than there was 10 years ago but it still isnt as cosmopolitan as other cities.
If you want to have a sea view then anywhere with that is going to be expensive however you are never too far from the sea wherever you live.
You could try torpoint or saltash, both in cornwall but only a short drive and generally lower prices.

Plymouth is a lovely place to live, there are flats in the city centre and near the docks around millbay that will have water views, i live in mount gould which has estuary views, there are pockets of water such as the lake at hooe, river views from tamerton foliot, barne barton, saltash is just over the bridge although waterfront properties there or from the plymouth side will be expensive. Paignton would be a pain of a commute. There are flats near me that have conservatories with river views that look lovely, they were up for sale but the sign recently says to let. There are so many lovely places in and around Plymouth Dartmoor in one direction, Cornwall a short drive, nearby beaches and lovely countryside in south hams, beautiful woodland around the river plym and of course the barbican and hoe. Good luck with your new job, Where will you be working? What area ? consider living in plymouth, if its not for you then you could move out to one of the villages or towns and commute at a later date.

Do you want a city feel or a village feel, and importantly what kind of price range are you looking at!

There are loads of lovely waterfront villages just outside Plymouth in the south Hams Wembury, Newton Ferrers. For still in Plymouth Turnchapel is nice

Paignton is a massive commute ( and not particularly nice ....over run in the summer with coach holiday tourists).

If you’re willing to commute from Paignton you might want to look at cornwall? But cheaper and not too bad a commute. I live mid cornwall and it takes me about 40 minutes to get to plymouth in the morning.
