Anyone know anywhere we could get away with wild camping near Bournemouth ?

Just me and the kids one night, I do think I could pitch up our small tent somewhere around the new forest, but I’m worried we could get trampled on by cows !!

Camp in your garden if you're that bothered about camping! Stay away from our lovely new forest we don't want you!

chomalungma · 25/06/2020 11:41

Have to say it was great going to Norway and Sweden last year - where wild camping is a thing and totally allowed.

Not that we did it - because we like our showers and electricity - but lots of people did.

Sensibly done in a remote wild area, leaving the site without a trace, wild camping is fine. Unfortunately there aren't many great locations in England.

People rocking up and leaving burned patches and litter, never OK

The difference with Norway and Sweden is that they have a fraction of the population with a much greater land mass. It's just not feasible in England.

Don't be a twat OP. Loads of us would love to wild camp but we don't because 1. It's illegal. 2. We give a shit about being part of a society where everyone has to do their bit for it to function.

foamrolling · 25/06/2020 11:55

You are clearly desperate for a beach holiday, we're going to be allowed to stay somewhere 'self contained' very soon. Why not just wait for that rather than make crazy plans that'll probably spoil your enjoyment anyway.

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 11:58

Please don’t come to Bournemouth- that is the plea from council and police. We have been inundated, we have an elderly population and our infrastructure can not cope.

PotteringAlong · 25/06/2020 11:59

It’s not illegal to go to the seaside for the day

Of course it isn’t. And no one said it was. It IS illegal to wild camp without permission. So just go to the seaside for the day and go home.

The point is, you might be ok and not BBQ and not leave litter and shit in bags for volunteers to pick up. Unfortunately other people do, so we have rules to say don't wild camp.

If you go camping then others should be allowed to as well, you can't have one rule for you and one for the rest of us.

The pp who said about wild camping in Scandinavia, great, it's part of their culture and they know how to behave. Sadly in this country it's not part of the tradition and unfortunately the vast majority of people do not seem to give a flying fuck about the environment and the impact their actions have on it. A group of 15 people were camping in the middle of Wareham forest the other night, lighting fires and BBQs, within sniffing distance of the huge fire which has devastated the heathland there. That's why it's not ok. Someone sees you doing it and thinks I'll do that too. Suddenly you have 30 tents on a sssi.

Urine and faeces causes changes to the soil pH and nutrient levels which can change the whole composition of the floral community. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's true, I have seen academic research on it.

Just don't do it!

Poor kids. Unless they’re older teenagers, being carted about to find a field to illegally sleep in after midnight doesn’t sound a whole lot of fun for them. Or particularly safe. OP you sound like one of these incredibly arrogant ‘alternative’ types who thinks the rules can’t possibly apply to special people like them, and of course you know better than the local people who are asking you to stay away for very valid reasons. You might think you’re being very cool wild camping with your kids but there are good reasons why this isn’t permitted. Grow up and have some respect for local people’s wishes, and stay off their land.

AppleJane · 25/06/2020 12:04

But if someone actually answered your question then it wouldn't just be you and the kids, it'd be everyone else who read it or pm'd Hmm

Devlesko · 25/06/2020 12:37

It's a shame OP, because if laws hadn't been changed you could have camped with the gypsies, we are very welcoming.
But alas, even we can't roam now, we have to buy land and try to get planning permission to build, or buy a house with enough land for our horse, carts, or trailers.
We used to live in the new forest for centuries until we were ethnically cleansed in the 60's.

This was just after the war, when Romany had managed to keep the natzi's from infiltrating England through the forest.
About 10 years later the British government decided to cleanse the area of Romany gypsies.
It's our human right, but even we can't camp now, OP.

Oakmaiden · 25/06/2020 12:45

There are parts of Dartmoor where you can wild camp legally. That isn't too far from Dorset.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2020 15:48

You're getting plenty of sense here, OP - just not what you want to hear.Hmm

Instead of having a few hours in a tent, cant you get up at daybreak - now is the perfect time of year for it - and drive to the beach?

CatBatCat · 25/06/2020 22:00

Anyone who has got a secret wild camping spot is not going to put it online for everyone and his dog to see

lakeswimmer · 25/06/2020 22:33

People are being fined for camping illegally in the Lakes - you may get caught. If other people can't do it why should you? If everyone did it there would be shit and litter all over the place. Campsites are planning to re-open on the 4th July. Wait until then.

Ginfordinner · 25/06/2020 22:39

Obvious I’ll have to have a look on some wild camping forums as not going to get any sense in here

But you are getting some sense on here. You just aren’t hearing what you want to hear. It is your arrogant inflated sense of self entitlement that is preventing you from seeing it. Don’t be so selfish Hmm

ttigerlilly · 25/06/2020 22:40

Please don't. That is all

Lardlizard · 25/06/2020 23:29

Devlesko that’s actually terrible 😨 so sorry that’s happened to your community

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 25/06/2020 23:30

Anyone interested in the wild camping there’s loads of good videos on YouTube

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 25/06/2020 23:30

Oakmaiden thanks I didn’t know that, I shall look into that further

OP posts:
heartsonacake · 25/06/2020 23:35

Shame on you.

heartsonacake · 25/06/2020 23:36

You’re literally teaching your children it’s okay to break the law for your own selfish reasons.

Spanielmadness · 25/06/2020 23:41

Check out google maps for suitable wooded/quiet locations. Did this a few weeks ago - was fab!
