Self catering cottage-would you book for August?

2 holidays abroad have been cancelled due to the virus. We have a family friend with a holiday let in Cornwall and she has kindly reserved our dates for August.

I'm aware that it won't be a normal UK holiday eg restaurants could be closed, etc but as long as we have nice food in there's a good size garden to play in and walkable small beaches. Board games, barbecues etc.

We all need a change of scene... Am I mad to book?

Do it! If not, I'd be happy to use your dates 😉

I've just had a week at my mums in Devon and we did some days over in Cornwall, most shops were open and all the public toilets. We couldn't do activities as such but the kids were happy running free on the beach. It was so nice for a change of scenery.

I'd definitely go if I were you

Mumteedum · 24/06/2020 16:13

I've booked today!

hellswelshy · 24/06/2020 16:15

Nope, I've booked a week in mid Wales for beginning of August, looking forward to it!

No, I've got the second week of August booked

CountessFrog · 24/06/2020 16:21

I’m booked. I booked it easter weekend!

I’m an optimist

ItsWhineTime · 24/06/2020 16:21

I’m going to Norfolk early August

parentofteen · 24/06/2020 16:22

We're going away 13 July. Can't bloody wait!

TerrapinStation · 24/06/2020 16:24

Have you missed something out? You haven't said any reason not to go, what is the concern?

I've seen a couple of threads recently about late check ins - is it that?

shinynewapple2020 · 24/06/2020 16:27

Absolutely I would book - have rebooked our cancelled Wales holiday the minute I saw the suggestion that Wales May be open for tourism by end of July. I did double check cancellation policy though.

starfishmummy · 24/06/2020 16:27

We cancelled ours a while ago when the kwner asked if we still wanted to go. Which I am now regretting. Sad

Alsohuman · 24/06/2020 16:29

Book it. You won’t regret it.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/06/2020 16:48

I'm concerned about the locals getting arsey with us. Although we'll avoid crowded places. Until recently the feeling generally seemed to be to stay away.

Nah, sod that

My concern is whether a local lockdown could be implemented after payment of the full balance, at which point you would probably lose the money.

Emmapeeler1 · 24/06/2020 16:57

If self-catering cottages are allowed to operate, I am not sure the locals can legitimately object? My brother has a house in Cornwall which he has not been to since February but he will be there as soon as he is legally allowed to be.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/06/2020 17:21

I'm glad that it's seen as acceptable now. Looking forward to fish and chips on the beach!

modgepodge · 24/06/2020 17:56

The locals can object all they like, but lots of these places (Devon, Cornwall, parts of wales) are highly dependent on tourism. I suspect the majority of business owners there will be keen for people to come once its allowed.

We’ve just booked a week in Devon for August.

Thanks for explaining the concern, from what you've siad you'll be doing it doesn't sound like you'd be having much contact with locals.

If they are unhappy about crowded beaches what would they be doing? Do they follow people home if they think they are holiday makers? Presuambly businesses want/need trade to survive so won't be objecting.

We don't know what will happen in the next two months but so far going to beaches hasn't had any affect on the rate of new infections

I would go for it, I just changed my France holiday to next year but booked Cornwall this year.
Sure locals glad to have tourists back as long as everyone follows rules. We're so lucky in uk so many fantastic beaches not sure why there are so many people at certain beaches when there are so many more much much emptier. We usually go Cornwall or wales each year and you can easily keep 2 metres apart at some of them.
