Neck ache

Yep, another banal question from Zaphod...

In my new house my sofa is in the middle of the room (so not against a wall, like it was in the old house). I sit and watch TV with my laptop on my lap so I can 'work' at the same time and I am getting neck ache like you wouldn't believe. There is nowhere to rest my head! In the old house I could lean my head back against the wall, but the low back of this sofa makes that not possible.

SIL suggested a neck pillow. Which just flops around my neck unless I prop it on one hand and lean my head over to the side (I've always had trouble with neck pillows - what are you meant to do? Droop?) which means I can't use the laptop and would be better off lying down, which is what DD3 suggested.

If I lie down I can't use the laptop. If I sit up I get chronic neck ache. Slumping seems to be the only way round it, but then I get back ache.

What is the solution?

That looks amazing! I'd be tempted to order if it wasn't from Wish and they wouldn't instantly fill my inbox and all other orifices with adverts for very strange items... might see if I can find one elsewhere.

Neck exercises look good. I need to sit with cushions in the small of my back to keep my back comfortable, which pushes me further forward from the sofa and means that I am sitting bolt upright.

My neck is too old. It's the only conclusion.

No advice but I get horrendous neck ache too and think it's my sofa! It's now started when I place my head a certain way. Even in bed. I bought some heat packs which helped and an aeroplane cushion helps too but it always comes back

I think, cautiously, that I might have an at least temporary solution. I've got a very firm V shaped pillow (the sort that you use when sitting in bed to feed a baby). If I sort of prop that so that one of the long arms sticks up, it gives me a little bit of support. Unfortunately, if I lean back against it it just folds over backwards, but it's better than nothing.

What do normal people DO?
