Share your stories of broken bones in late pregnancy!

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and we're having the bathroom redone, so there is dust everywhere, despite frequent cleaning. Coming down the stairs the other day, I slipped off the dusty bottom step on to the floor and my ankle took the full brunt of mine and baby's weight. I heard a crack. Three fractures and a fabulous, vomit-inducing X-ray of my lower tibia no longer sitting in the ankle socket as it should Grin

I'm in plaster and wheelchair-bound in a 3 storey house with only one bathroom and toilet (which are upstairs, naturally). I'm not allowed decent painkillers because of the pregnancy so am paracetamolled up to my eyeballs.

I actually consider myself lucky, bar the initial accident. DS (3) wasn't there to see it and although home alone, I had my phone in my pocket to call an ambulance. After dragging myself across the floor, I managed to find and reach up for the usually missing house keys, open the door and throw them to the paramedics to open the gate. I didn't land on my belly and baby is fine. Cast should come off at 37+1.

The pain is something else though 😱

Anyone got any similar stories to share, to take my mind off the constant throbbing feeling in my leg?!

You have my sympathies, didn’t break a bone while pregnant but did when I had a 4 month old and lived in a first floor flat, was stuck in a cast for 3 weeks. That was fun.

Oh god you poor thing, that sounds horrendous. I can just imagine the pain you're in. I hope the time passes as quickly as possible for you! Thanks

Thanks both! The pain is getting better, until I have to get up for the loo and bend my knee. The blood rushing down, even slowly, is not nice.

The day after it happened, I'd had emergency surgery at midnight and the anaesthetic wore off at 5am. From that point on, I was in complete and utter agony until 11pm, even though they were hitting me with Tramadol, morphine, paracetamol and something else I hadn't heard of. About 10pm I demanded gas and air (best stuff EVER) and told them to ring the bloody maternity ward for advice on pain control. Ended up on codeine and back in surgery for a nerve blocker. Unbelievable experience.

Had a new cast put on on Monday and the docs say I'll need crutches (or a Zimmer frame given the pregnancy ) for a while longer after it comes off. It's not definite that I'll be able to walk unaided and hold the baby for a few weeks. We've got nappy change stations in the bedroom and bathroom but we'll have to put a third one in the living room. The adventure continues!

Bumping this as I'm now starting to worry about what happens when baby arrives.

I'll get the cast off 3/4 weeks before my due date but may be in the wheelchair a bit longer, and certainly on the Zimmer frame. I'll need physio for God knows how long and the orthopaedic surgeon said my ankle will take a good year to repair. Am I going to be able to attempt a vbac with things the way they are?

Had a scan yesterday, baby is breech again so if she hasn't turned by the end of July, it'll be another ELCS. I know there's no easy way of getting a baby out of you but I just can't face that thought at the moment. I just had a fairly big op last week and am now looking at major abdominal surgery in 7 weeks' time. I've tired of being in pain, in constant tears from stress worried for poor DH, who is beyond exhausted from looking after us all.
