My ibs is playing up massively this week. Normally I keep it fairly under control. But this week I can’t see to get it back under control.
What do u do to help it. Maybe someone here has something I have not tried.

For me what works is drinking loads and loads of water and cutting right back to plain food. I tend to live on white bread toast for a couple of days when it's really bad. Also, I rest as much as I can. Not sure how easy that is for you but it makes a big difference to me.

Hope you feel better soon - it's an awful condition when it flares up.

I have the added bonus of being wheat free , dairy free and high blood sugar levels. Also have a broken bladder which is affected by the food I eat as well.
I normally have things under control by eating a very restricted diet. But everything is flaring up this week. I’m at breaking point to be honest. Trying to fix one thing at a time. So starting with the one that is the most painful.

Normally I would have cereal with rice milk as that is my only real safe food. But that was sending my sugar levels all over the place. So need to try something else. I will start with the extra water x

have you tried fasting?
doing 16:8 seems to calm it right down for me.

Have you tried the fodmap diet? My IBS had me in tears, was spending all day long on the toilet and was struggling to eat or drink as I knew I'd be straight on the toilet. Three or four months ago I started the fodmap diet and have only had two or three bad days that whole time

BearSoFair · 23/06/2020 21:09

Peppermint tea or peppermint oil capsules seem to really make a difference for me. I was really struggling recently, started peppermint capsules the weekend before last and have been feeling the most normal I have since March!

PaperMonster · 23/06/2020 21:11

Having to go low carb to help my blood sugar levels has really helped my IBS.

AmazingAardvark · 23/06/2020 21:19

Ugh, it’s exhausting isn’t it - massive sympathy from a fellow sufferer here!
Are you getting enough sleep? And are you feeling stressed or anxious? Those are big triggers for me.
Alflorex probiotics (from Boots, quite expensive) were recommended by an NHS dietician I saw and I think they do help. I drink loads of peppermint tea too.
Also, if you haven’t seen a dietician recently, make an appointment with one via your GP.

I’ve suffered from IBS for years, tried cutting out all sorts of food. Recently had a bad bout of diverticulitis, antibiotics needed. I couldn’t eat for days. Went onto a low FODMAP diet (Monash university site). It’s been remarkable! I think completely cutting out onions and garlic have been key. I’ve progressed to including higher FODMAP vegetables but have continued the no onions or garlic, it’s miraculous 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Mrsmchammer · 23/06/2020 21:50

FODMAP without a doubt. I've IBD and when I'm starting to feel off I just FODMAP for 3 weeks and basically reset.

Paranoidmarvin · 24/06/2020 05:59

Thanks. I have been following the fodmap
For a few years. But it seems to be all over the place at the moment no matter what I do

I'll second 16:8 fasting. I've been doing it for a fortnight and have been IBS free. Also cut down on carbs...so no bread, pasta etc seems to have helped me.

Burnshersmurfs · 24/06/2020 06:05

Low-carb (Whole30 in particular) has been a huge help for me too, as has upping my water intake. Sometimes my IBS is triggered by just being unwell or rundown, lasts for a bit and then goes away again when I'm back on my feet. Is there a possibility that this is the case for you? If so, you probably just need to rest up for a bit and wait it out.

reesewithoutaspoon · 24/06/2020 06:11

My daughter has had really good resuts taking reguar L.Plantarum capsules (gut probiotic)

Roselilly36 · 24/06/2020 06:14

Are you under a lot of stress? That alone can cause a flare up. I hope you are feeling better soon, I would also recommend High Strength Peppermint oil capsules & Peppermint Tea.

Paranoidmarvin · 24/06/2020 06:25

Nope. Not stressed and I sleep well so not tired. I think when I started to have to change my diet to looking at my blood sugar levels everything changed. I actually feel like I’m running out of food to eat. The doctor just shakes his head and basically says get on with it.

have you seen a gastroenerologist?
maybe ask for a referral.
have you observed your symptoms in relation to your cycle? could it be endometriosis?

ibs is a bit of a 'go away' diagnosis. when it should really only be used as a 'last' diagnosis if thorough investigations do not show a cause.

Whataracket · 24/06/2020 06:35

I find that if I have a flare up, going back to a basic diet really helps. It is like I can normally tolerate a bit of some things, but if I have a flare up I go back to basics. Buscopan helps me as well as a heat pack and drinking plenty of water.

I also read a book that really helped. I think it was called Irritable Bowel Solutions or something like that. I would look at the Fodmap diet too.

Veterinari · 24/06/2020 07:09

Get tested for coeliac disease
Get tested for bile acid malabsorption

peppermint buscopan FODMAP
