what can we do for a holiday this year?

so, we usually go to France, borrowed house with a pool, remote, so not much going on.
After a busy term etc it is lovely to have family together, time as a family etc etc. few meals out/markets/river canoeing, not much more.

This year, house is not likely unless a lot changes. We are also sick of the sight of each other, I am desperate to do something that isn't sitting around in a house, but have no idea what.
No idea if anything is even going to be available/open.

Money is tight (hence the borrowed house) I have 3 teens, oldest has already said he won't come anywhere for 2 weeks, but might do 1.

I have been racking my brains. I wondered about something like surf school, but they were meh, and would they even be open?

Younger 2 will camp (we have camping stuff) oldest won't and to be fair last time we camped was a washout.

What are you doing? Where are you going? Any ideas?

all houses to rent our out of our budget I think.

Sticking to plan here
Beautiful apartment right on beach in the UK
Barcelona next year

We managed to squeeze in Caribbean in Feb just before lockdown!

If I were you - tent somewhere. New forest? Coast

Together but totally different environment

just had a scroll through cheap holidays online, which was a mistake, as they are all too expensive, and anyway, not sure if we would need to quaratine etc.

well, say all too expensive, some were OK, but then so basic that it doens't look much fun!

sh won't sit in the sun/beach so there has to be something else on offer eg walks/old town

I am leaning towards tent, but I am afriad of being washed out again!

I've hired a cottage in north Wales in August - change of scenery, water sports nearby, beaches, castles and cycle hire. Hopefully.

With three teens and after three months all cooped up at home I'd say you want something outdoorsy and sporty to encourage them to get out and be active (and also to give you some space!). What about a place with water sports? Not just surfing, but sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding, canyoning, wild swimming, etc?

I'm lucky that a family member has a caravan by the coast that we can stay in for free so we will hopefully do that.

steppemum · 22/06/2020 12:52

do you think the watersports places will be open?

Just reading another thread about 'would you fly this summer' and realise that we actually probably wouldn't fly anyway even if we coudl afford nice, so it is going to be UK

Yes, I think that in July/Aug water sports probably will be open (but Boris is due to make an announcement tomorrow apparently regarding UK holidays, so you probably want to hear what he says before you book anything).

As for flying, don't forget there's also the Eurotunnel. I'd drive over to France, Holland or Belgium, but I wouldn't get in a plane right now. The only problem currently is the quarantine when we come back, so based on that we're sticking with the UK holiday we booked last autumn (cottage in the Peak District).

Tropical2 · 22/06/2020 12:57

Water sports have been allowed since 13 May, if the holiday parks etc are allowed to open from July then the sports should be, they need to get their business open again same as everyone else.

steppemum · 22/06/2020 13:04

Tropical - all the water sport places in the link upthread are closed.

Some I think because what they offer can't be social distanced, but even canoe hire etc are closed. I assume it is because all tourist stuff is still closed?

I also read that eg Spanish hotels may not be allowed to have pools open and you have to book a slot on beach/in restaurant.

we coudl drive, but then we might as well drive down to France. We would struggle with return quarantine though, as we can't go until August and would end up too close to schools going back (ha ha) for quaratine

A lot of campsites in Ireland are only taking self contained units (caravans, motorhomes) this year. If it’s similar in the U.K. a tent camping holiday might not be possible.

zafferana · 22/06/2020 13:12

Yes, good point @Barbararara. I've read somewhere that holidays with shared facilities (such as tent camping) won't be in the first wave of holidays to reopen here either. Hopefully, we'll find out more tomorrow ...

steppemum · 22/06/2020 13:58

may have to be a cottage hire. Which is kind of home from home unless you go to an amazing location, and then too pricey.

hmm

so desperate to get away.

(actually I'll just wear a face mask and get on a plane to Marrakesh, £129 for 7 nights. My drea destination, and no kids, completely different to here. Bliss. Not happening, but hey ho)

We are waiting until later in the year until we can see what is happening with these “air bridges” that they keep talking about. Also when it might be clearer what the UK and other countries are going to do with their borders and quarantine restrictions etc.

We hope to get a short break maybe at short notice and DH has just sent off his passport renewal forms (his expires in September) so that we will be able to book when / if an opportunity presents itself. If it doesn’t then we will have to wait until next year.

I know how you feel though. It feels rather like Groundhog Day here now, with currently nothing much to look forward to.

steppemum · 22/06/2020 16:53

We are restricted to school holidays unfortunately, and even with air bridges, I am not sure I want to be in a plane with recycled air. One sick passenger will infect everyone, even if you are the other end of the plane from them.
