When is it sensible to start looking for a new job?

Is it crazy to start looking for a new job in the near future? I'm currently employed and while I feel incredibly lucky to have a job at all at the moment, I want to find a new job for various reasons. However, the thought of a second lockdown and being let go from a job I've only just started is hovering over me. When do you think it will be 'safe' to start job hunting?

It probably depends on what you want to do. If you want to move into care work - go for it There are LOADS of care work jobs and they're not likely to be getting rid of people any time soon.

@chocolateisavegetable I currently work in admin so it would probably be that sort of thing. Care work sounds rewarding (though obviously hard work) but I'm a bit squeamish about bodily fluids etc. so probably not the right thing for me.

Greydove28 You're probably right, but I don't know if I'll maintain my sanity if I hang on much longer.

Nothing wrong with seeing what’s out there!

Completely depends on what you want to do - I moved jobs job lockdown but my sector is basically uneffected, so no riskier than normal.

I put an advertisement online yesterday - finance role, someone is leaving next week. There are definitely jobs around.

Yellredder · 23/06/2020 07:28

I've been looking for a while. Not applied for anything since the week before lockdown, but didn't hear anything about that. Applied for one this weekend and seen another one to apply for later this week.

If you see a suitable job apply
We can not predict the future or covid so best to carry on and hope for the best.
I find applying online is pretty quick to do.
Sanity is most important to try and maintain.

I work in recruitment for a support worker provider and we are recruiting as normal.

I started a new job on 1st June and had to hand my notice in whilst my new employer was closed during lockdown! However I had worked for my new employer before and they approached me with a good offer, so I had a bit of trust in them not to screw me over, and my old boss was making me ill with stress.

So for me it was worth the risk, you need to weigh up your own risks

I’m actively looking.

I do have a job, but my mental health is suffering, and I’ve been there less than 2 years so won’t really be giving up any rights to a redundancy payout if they were to let me go. I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance whether I’ll still be in the job by Christmas or not due to Covid!

So I’m looking, and I have seen quite a few jobs to apply for. However, if your current job is pretty secure and you’ve been there a while, I’d probably advise you to wait it out for a few months.
