Book of advice/recipes/tips for kids leaving home

This is a topic close to my heart. My mum died when I was small and left no advice to me and my older siblings and when I was pregnant the doctors had loads of questions that I didn't know how to answer and there was no one alive left to help.

So I want to write in a "naice" notebook all the stuff that my DDs might need to know plus some recipes, advice, tips etc. Something in my voice that they'll always have. Plus the story of their births/pregnancies which I wrote at the time.

I know there have been some threads on this but I cannot for the life of me find them. One was by a lovely lady for her son leaving home.

So please can you share your ideas for content. And links to any other threads on the subject. Thanks.

I had a school friend with an older sister and her parents put some money in her account as she was leaving home for uni. She was this to treat it as a zero balance so if she went over she wouldn't go overdrawn. I have managed my own accounts on the same basis since.

I worked for someone early on who taught me to buy a glass chopping block as easy to clean and hard to damage.

I could make food when I left home, but was rubbish at shopping for it or batch cooking or at food shopping to a tight budget.

My parents gave me a tool kit on my last Christmas at home which was very handy.

Sure there are lots more ideas out there.

Thank you for your input. Two DDs that are so different - so at least their books will be different. One is good at DIY and one at cooking.

I'm planning on adding the first post from the "Now listen up" thread that used to be a sticky at the top of relationships.

Random food tips:

Tomatoes / strawberries and avocados taste so much nicer if left on a sunny windowsill
Cut tomatoes round the middle rather than through the stem and they hold together much better
Freeze leftover lemons in slices for drinks
Freeze stale bread as breadcrumbs
Etc etc

Random household tips:
Clean loo / sinks with spray cleaner and wipe with kitchen or loo roll. Instant shine
Peg out socks together on single peg
Store bundles of bedding together
Have 2 of each hand towels where you need them - 1 in the wash then replaced every time when clean

If you find the 'why didn't I know that?' Threads they would be good for inspiration

Other topics
Sewing / mending
DIY
Fuses / stop cocks / meter readings
Health??
How to holiday! Packing / food / entertainment / logistics / travel
Car maintenance basics
Finances - savings, direct debits, paying bills, mortgage basics, pensions

That's excellent thanks. So many of those I do - like packing list so I could add my basic copy which they can add to.

A notebook may not be enough! I might have to do an online file with a link.

My granny gave me the readers digest book of DIY which was invaluable.

Slightly depressing but what about a list of relationship red flags? And a list of useful numbers the Samaritans?

TimeIhadaNameChange · 23/06/2020 09:10

(Sorry, that was meant to say “including the Samaritans”.

I have copied into Evernote a list of useful links and resources copied off one thread, which is sort of what I meant about the online file.

Theses are the MN resources I've included so far

I still wish I could find the 2 threads that talked about the book they were doing for their adultish kids leaving home. I even added to one of them, but can't find it despite googling my user name and trawling through the 30 odd pages.
