Places to walk Lancashire Preston way!

heatherj96 · 21/06/2020 19:19

Hi everyone could anyone recommend nice places to go with a child and pram for walks & picnic within an hours drive of Preston? 😄 preferably with postcode 😆

Don't mind going a bit further if its really nice 👍🏻

Don’t go to Lytham. Thousands of people on the green. Horrible.

We went there earlier this week - but on a weekday, and not the greatest of weather (ok for walking) - it wasn't too busy. And we're** very crowd-averse.

If you want to go somewhere that's likely to be popular then definitely don't go on a nice weekend!

Second avenham and miller park, you can usually park near the continental pub

Haslam park is nice with a little one too - the walk can be extended by going along the canal.

Pendle Hill - Lancaster if you really want a walk
Not sure what is open but the hills have lots of history with the witches.
Friend of mine found out her ancestor was a pendle witch.*

I have ALWAYS wanted to go there!

Since you mention Lancaster - along the Lune, and Williamson park. Also the canal has some nice stretches. Morecambe sea front - fabulous views over the bay to the lakes on a clear day, and heysham is quite pretty (the port and power station are hidden round the corner)

Lytham will be fine if OP is wanting to go during the week, most of the places will be 'horrible' if you go on a sunny weekend!

How about Yarrow Valley Country Park, Chorley?
There is a cafe and garden centre close by.

I’m not sure how accessible it is for prams though.

@Bluesheep8 - looking out my window at that big witchy hill!!

NorthernChinchilla · 22/06/2020 13:17

Try Garstang, nice and mainly flat!

Imissmoominmama · 22/06/2020 13:34

You couldn’t do Nicky Nook with a pram, but you could walk the millennium green in Garstang, (through to Scorton if your pram is robust). The green is has a gated off picnic area (which hasn’t had its grass cut recently!) where dogs can’t go. It’s next to the river. It’s an easy walk with small children. The postcode is PR3 1FA for the starting car park.

Scorton Picnic Site is next to woods and the river and has paths which again would need a fairly robust pram- postcode PR31BU.

Or Knott End, along to Pilling Sands.

Or Glasson Dock- come back toward the Stork Pub (unfortunately fire damaged), then down the old train path toward Lancaster.

Or down the Lancaster canal towpath at any point is nice- herons will follow youSmile.

Enjoy your walk!

ErrolTheDragon · 22/06/2020 14:59

Some more rural parts of the Lancaster canal towpath are a bit narrow (especially when the vegetation has grown up) for social distancing, and may be muddy and not great for a pram, unfortunately.

Oh Pendle is lovely Grin and I am not a fan of hills generally. My friend has a farm up there, the jammy sod.

Thanks all will have a google tonight 😊

Seriously, the Brickcroft is great. They have loo in normal times. Bakery is over the road. Lots of ducks to feed and other wildlife, hand tame robins. It's about 30/40 minutes walk round the two lakes/ponds and all pram friendly.

WokeJokeOpus · 22/06/2020 19:11

Just that you need a pre-booked ticket to park there and access the Abbey and surrounding walks.

heatherj96 · 22/06/2020 19:26

@WokeJokeOpus ah yes obviously silly me! Well thats rubbish but then again very fair it is often absolutely rammed 🤦🏻‍♀️ just checked for Wednesday and the river car park is sold out already 10-12 but not before or after? Does that mean you have a time limit 😩

@heatherj96 I think they are just trying to stagger people arriving but you can stay as long as you like
