How do I get my baby to poop

DD is weaning and hadn't pooped for a while.

I've tried prunes and pears but nothing has happened.

What else can I try.

Kiwi fruit was always the winner for me.

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 18:31

The juice of a squeezed orange.

No expert, but how about a baby massage.

How long is a while? Poo frequency often changes with weaning. Is she uncomfortable? If she is, try increased fluids generally, orange juice and kiwi fruit.

Have you tried bicycle legs?

RememberTheSunnierDays · 21/06/2020 18:57

If you do give fresh fruit juice it’s probably best to dilute with water.

Prune pouches from Ella's kitchen flush my baby through. It is gross but it worries!

Works*

How long?
My dd is weaning at the moment too. She doesn’t poop every day now and sometimes goes a couple of days.
This is baby 4 so it’s definitely not unusual. Do you offer some water with food? That can help. The Ella’s kitchen prunes pouches are good if it’s a real blockage. If baby is actually constipated, trying but can’t go. Call your GP

My little one often struggled with this. Sweet potatoes always helps. With bicycles legs . Always works for him.

It's been about 4 days, she's leaving skid marks but hadn't done a proper poop.

She's not straining/grunting so I don't think she's properly blocked but she's been very windy and isn't sleeping (she is teething though)

I'll get some kiwis and an Ella's pouch to see if that helps

I work with babies and always recommend massage. There's lots of free guides on YouTube and quite straightforward. Don't just focus on tummy though, aim for a full body routine as it's about making the baby feel relaxed overall so they release. If their tummy is feeling sore they may not want that area touching.

  • Pear and prune puree (though you've tried that already)
  • Cutting down on milk, formula and yoghurt which can be constipating
  • I often made wholegrain baby porridge using fennel tea instead of formula, which also helps with bloating and wind
  • No bananas or apple sauce
  • Sweet potato and zucchini puree. Sweet potato can be constipating for some babies but it worked great for DD. The combo with zucchini tastes sweet and mild and she gets it almost every day to stay regular
  • I also found it helped to let DD crawl around (and later walk around) soon after eating which is when she's most likely to poo. Strapping her in a car seat or stroller right after meals meant she couldn't go and made things worse.

Good luck! They will grow out of it eventually as their digestive system adjusts to solid food but my life was dictated by poo for a good 6 months!

My son had this as soon as we started weaning.

I would contact your GP. We were prescribed glycerol suppositories (which you can buy over the counter but as for the really small ones) lactulose and laxido. He would have little smears and would strain to go and it was clearly painful. I used a suppository and about 30 cm of solid poo came out. It was horrendous but so much better when it was all out and then just try to keep soft. The nurse told me their bowl stretches temporarily the more constipated they get so best to just try keep it soft. We tried Ella's kitchen prune sachets, fresh orange with water ut nothing helped other than laxitives.

My son is 2 and half now and still has to take one laxido a day. He was referred to the constipation clinic quite early on and they said keep on the laxatives until fully potty trained.
