I've tried Silvo cloths but they make minimal difference

Is there a better way?

Cloths are laborious aren’t they? My dad swears by a good scrub in the hands with some washing up liquid. You can also buy pots of jewellery cleaning dip.

Foil, bicarb and hot water. Not suitable for silver plated items though!

You can do it with hot water, bicarbonate of soda and aluminium foil.

Scrub with washing up liquid then soak overnight in neat vodka. You can buy special stuff to soak it in but I found vodka works just as well.

Are they definitely solid silver? If they’re plated there’s not much hope TBH.

You can clean solid silver by placing it in a nest of aluminium foil, in a bowl, covering with salt and pouring on boiling water. Leave it a while then take it out and wash with washing up liquid.

Toothpaste! Brush on, rinse off

CockCarousel · 21/06/2020 16:30

These are the absolute nuts.

Scootergrrrl · 21/06/2020 16:32

Just wear it for a couple of days. Cleans up tarnished silver like magic!

I volunteer in a charity shop and one of my favourite jobs is polishing silver jewellery, it's so satisfying to make it all nice and shiny.

We use Goddard's silver polish. I wear rubber gloves, put a small 10p piece sized blob in the palm of my hand and just rub over the jewellery with fingers. When it's clean - and you can tell because of the manky gloves - rinse under warm water and buff with a teatowel.

Once clean wear them from time to time to keep them clean

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 16:44

Hot water, soap and soft nail brush .

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 21/06/2020 16:45

Toothpaste

CuriousaboutSamphire · 21/06/2020 16:54

Toothpaste.

If it looks really sad an old toothbrush and cheap toothpaste, though any will do the trick.

One clean get into the habit of wiping it down with the cloths every now and then.

My most delicate silver lives in a food bag, wrapped in silver cloth.

Wear it. It’ll be bright and shiny in a day or two.

We have a product in South Africa called Handy Andy and that cleans silver really well..

candilemon · 21/06/2020 19:26

Fairy Liquid, apparently!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 21/06/2020 19:28

I can't believe all the work some if you put in. Just dunk in a jar of silver dip. They come out gleaming. Even silver plated stuff goes in and usually comes up at least a bit cleaner.

AnnaFiveTowns · 21/06/2020 19:35

Ive tried loads of ways but the best Ive found is foil in the bottom of a dish; cover it with sodium bicarb; place the silver on top then pour on boiling water; leave it for one minute max and then rinse and dry.

BaileysforBreakfast · 21/06/2020 19:37

When not wearing, keep silver in airtight container, so it doesn't oxidise. Silver goes black when exposed to sulphur in the air.

I wouldn't touch silver dip with a bargepole, especially if it's engraved, embossed, etc., but a good silver cloth is great, It won't get right in the nooks and crannies, but do you want it to?
