Can I ask a stupid question about holiday homes?

If you're staying somewhere with more rooms than people, is the total amount charged the same as if every room was full?

I've only ever stayed in hotels or holiday cottages with one bedroom, and for some reason I can't find a definitive answer to this question.

On lots of websites they give a price outline with "prices based on 8 people staying" or whatever, which implies there is a difference, but at the same time it also would seem reasonable to charge a standard rate given that you get the whole house no matter how many people are there.

Thanks!

It's a flat rate for cottages etc. If it advertises a price per person, the figure will be the rate divided by the number of people a property can sleep. The price per person is higher for under occupancy.

It depends. In the U.K. you generally pay per unit so it's irrelevant how many are staying. For overseas self catering it varies, for independently booked generally you pay per unit but for packages that include travel often charge per person but have an under occupation supplement.

Always read the full terms and conditions!

Some places charge extra if you use the extra beds / towels etc as you put their costs up. I think the key is in £1200 per week sleeps up to 6 or £200 pp per week based on 6 sharing.
The former being a clear cost per unit, the latter if they charge you less for 4 people then they don't want you to use the extra beds etc. Hope that makes sense.
It is surprising how many guests will use absolutely everything unnecessarily which is unfair if they've charged you less.

It varies by cottage and company , some places give discount for under occupancy.
