Where do you shop for your 9yr old girls?

My dd is 9 and a nightmare to shop for.
She has never been a girly girl and has had quite a lot of boys tops in the past.

She has, a serious lack of clothes at the moment and the ones she does have are too small or her leggings have holes in but she doesn't like ANYTHING!

She doesn't like those tops that sit on the waistband and there seem to be a lot of them about. She doesn't like t shirts that are too long she says they look like a dress.
She doesn't like pink, girly, mermaids, unicorns or princesses but she seems to have gone off things that are too boyish either Hmm

When she does find an outfit she likes she ends up wearing it and nothing else. She does quite like skulls, leggings ripped jeans and likes to look "cool" Grin

She's gone on a rare day to her dad's so I want to see if I can get her some stuff without her here to reject every suggestion or she's going to have nothing but pjs to wear soon.

Which shops shall I start with?

My DD likes a sort of sporty, casual look and I get most of her clothes from H&M.

Vaunting · 21/06/2020 10:57

Try H&M jeans in the boys department. They tend to be cut more traditionally mid waist. In fact most boys jeans are better I find.

I always shop boy and girl departments and take a few bits from here and there. H&M, M&S, Zara kids, George Asda, Boden, Next, Polarn O Pyret.

We also bought lots of plain t shirts and fabric paint and she designed her own. She did tie-dye at a friends...Grin

My DD is older but when she was nine I had similar issues with the added problem that she was in age 11 clothes.

Exhaustedpenguin · 21/06/2020 10:58

My DD wears dungarees permanently. Either short ones paired with patterned tights or long ones and then she just has a plain tshirt under. You can get some really good 'cool' ones from River Island/ Next / H&m without unicorns or rainbows!

H &m too. Don’t find that their tops are actually that cropped.

GreyishDays · 21/06/2020 11:06

And actually the odd bit from M&S. She’s 10 now but has three of these which are lovely (thin jumper hoodies).

Have you tried next? They stock other brands now, my daughter has just got a pair of river island ripped jeans from there which she absolutely loves.

AudacityOfHope · 21/06/2020 11:15

H&M and New Look

happypotamus · 21/06/2020 11:23

My 9 year old is not 'cool' at all, but also likes very little of what is available at the moment and has very few clothes that fit. Pre-lockdown I got a lot of her clothes from H&M. Tried to get a huge order, partly using her birthday money, from there a couple of months ago, as there was lots she liked, but we ordered 11 items and only 3 were delivered with no warning or notice or reason given. We have since got a few things from Matalan, Mountain Warehouse (not 'cool' at all but we liked the shorts, t-shirts and hoodies), Debenhams and Sainsburys.

Studycast · 21/06/2020 11:29

Next have the unicorn stuff your dd dislikes but they also always do plain tops and as it happens, ATM, they have a lot of monochrome black and white t-shirts and vests which you can pair with black and blue denim shorts and dungarees.

RightOnTheEdge · 21/06/2020 11:41

Thanks for answering everyone!
I'll get looking at all those.

GreyishDays those hoodie must be really popular they have all sold out but the camouflage leggings look great. She would probably like camouflage.

My ds is so much easier. At the moment he's not too fussy as long as its comfy.

H&M have plenty of basic top, leggings etc with plain colours or non-fussy patterns

I also like LaRedoute (used to get loads from Vert Baudet, the sister company, when DD was smaller and still find some nice stuff in her size)

Rustyigloo · 21/06/2020 11:51

I find places like Mountain Warehouse good for my non-girly but still wants to look cool 9 year old.
Their fabrics always wash well too.

ohthegoodtimes · 21/06/2020 12:00

My 9 year old likes SHEIN, H&M, new look and primark.

Painterwitharose · 21/06/2020 12:06

H&M , Gap, John Lewis - you can find plainer/cooler stuff in amongst the unicorns and flowers!

Painterwitharose · 21/06/2020 12:07

My DD likes dungarees too, and dungaree dresses - would your DD like this maybe?

MojoJojo71 · 21/06/2020 12:10

H&M, Gap, primark and supermarkets usually but we always go to both the boys and girls departments and she usually chooses a mixture from both. Sometimes I insist on boys versions like when we bought shorts for the summer and the one in the girls section barely covered the cheeks of her bum!

MazDazzle · 21/06/2020 12:11

New Look. Their clothes are quite plain and not too girly - no pink, sequins or unicorns. Both of my daughters have had leggings, trousers, tops and coats from there. The sizing is a bit on the small side though. If I’m looking for basics, like shorts or T-shirts, then I usually look in the boys’ section at Next.

IndieTara · 21/06/2020 14:22

New Look are great for ripped jeans and tops which aren't girly

Serena1977 · 21/06/2020 14:25

We shop in Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's boys and girls section also Next, Monsoon and M&S.

BluebellForest836 · 21/06/2020 14:33

New look, river island, primark

JustC · 21/06/2020 15:07

I would add to all the places already suggested, to ask her if she'd like the boys department more. There tends to be more skulls and bones in that section.

RightOnTheEdge · 21/06/2020 20:23

Thanks I didn't think of New Look for kids!

Painterwitharose I love that dress! She won't wear dresses though.

MojoJojo71 dd wears boy's uniform shorts for school. She loves them especially the pockets. She won't wear the uniform summer dresses even with cycling shorts under.

Thank you everybody for all your help and suggestions, I really appreciate it.

I've bought her some of the 3 for 2 leggings from M&S including some camouflage and zebra prints.
A pair of cropped cargo trousers from Next and a pack of plain tops from H&m.
Just watching some new with tags t-shirt pack from ebay that's ending soon.
Hopefully she will approve!
