Should I get highlights?

I'm considering getting highlights when the salon open, but I think I'm too old now tbh.
What colours do people have?
Are they acceptable in a professional job?
Do they still look good when your hair is in a ponytail?

@dementedpixie
Which one is best if your hair is in a ponytail a lot?

Senior management do tend to frown about it sometimes though. In external meetings.

That’s... strange. I can only think they have very obvious, chunky, highlights? Maybe a bit unnatural looking? I have highlights, I work in a professional job, and I would be very surprised if anyone was offended by my hair Grin

Op just take a look around you. Highlights are popular and can be done subtly and naturally. Trust me no one in work will bar and eyelid

Yes, it's one rule for senior management and the executive team and another for us. They won't sack or give disciplinary for it but they just aren't keen on it in external meetings.

If you want it to look more even in a ponytail then full head would be best. If you get a half head then the underneath section would be your natural hair colour

dementedpixie · 20/06/2020 20:48

a lot of people with blonde hair may have achieved it with highlights. Mine looks blonde even though my natural colour is mid brown

Highlights and lowlights (and root growth due to lockdown!)

Should I get highlights?

It can be scary before having highlights and I would def advise against anything high contrast e.g jet black with platinum streaks. Subtle balayage could be a good option?

Definitely go to a really good colourist (when open) and have a consultation; they will be able to advise based on your end goal, natural hair & skin tone.

If the end result of highlights is natural/classy/well-groomed then this is perfectly acceptable in any professional environment.

If the end result looks cheap/damaged hair then that’s less ideal.

So it depends on getting a good professional job done in the first place. You can always dye it back if you don’t like it... live dangerously!!! Gin

The top image on your first link isn’t highlights that’s balayage. What colour is your hair and what colour are you hoping for?
I prefer balayage to highlights as less maintenance! My hair naturally is mousy blonde so with balayage it blends down to lighter blonde. Last done in October so a bit grown out now, going to let everyone else get their roots done before I take a hairdressers appointment! I use toners at home to either go ashy blonde or silver. If you have dark hair it will obviously stand out more.

Sorry I don't believe any senior managers would even mention highlights. Fact is that they won't even know that half their senior women have highlights.

MobLife · 20/06/2020 21:17

Your senior management aren't keen on highlights in external meetings??

titchy · 20/06/2020 21:19

Ah. A new poster....

tippexed · 20/06/2020 21:23

This is quite bizarre. Are you aware of workplace protected characteristics. An employer can not discriminate on grounds of pregnancy, race, sex etc etc.
I'm pretty sure highlighted hair isn't on the list

Burpalot · 20/06/2020 21:38

Is this a weird highlight troll? Like a poo troll but gets turned on by chunky blonde strips? Ooer

titchy · 20/06/2020 21:42

Or the shoe one? Any rules on shose OP?Wink

CruCru · 20/06/2020 21:51

Hmm. I'd say they are pretty standard - many women with blonde hair will have had highlights done.

I am guilty of assuming that someone with highlights is doing it to cover up grey hair though.

CruCru · 20/06/2020 21:53

I can understand senior management being funny about brassy, cheap looking dye jobs. However, a well done set of highlights should be fine.

Nicknacky · 20/06/2020 21:58

I don’t believe for a second management notice or care about highlights.
