Just curious.

Thanks

Lurking as I’ve just started teaching Dd myself. She’s also booked with a proper instructor for as soon as possible.

It’s a long time ago but I had 6x 2 hour lessons so 12 hours of lessons and passed first time. I drove a lot with my dad before lessons though.

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/06/2020 16:56

I did 50 hours over 6 weeks, packed them in - I don’t think I would have learned otherwise! I see struggled to get the basics to start with so got some extra hours (originally booked 40) Passed first time and love driving now. My brother did 40 hours in 5 weeks at the same time and passed first time.

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/06/2020 16:57

I’ve never driven at all before I started to learn

It felt like 5000 hours of lessons and 72 tests but in reality I had 60 hours over 2 months and passed third time!

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/06/2020 16:58

This was 8 years ago if relevant. The test is stricter and more detailed in the last 10 years than previously, so people often need more lessons

something2say · 20/06/2020 16:58

I did a week course. Test the second Friday. Passed.

lymphopenia · 20/06/2020 16:59

20 hours with an instructor, probably about 5 or 6 with my parents. Passed after 12 weeks.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 20/06/2020 16:59

About 18 when I turned 17, was too nervous and gave up. Stared again at 26, think I had about 25 lessons, but I paid for them individually so I can't quite remember. Was still really nervous, but passed first time.

DelphiniumBlue · 20/06/2020 17:00

About 150 lessons. I was really dreadful, but persistent. 3 x 1 hour lessons a week for about a year, and practising with Mum. I've been driving for more than 30 years, and still don't like it, but do it for convenience.
Passed my test 3rd time.

UnicornAndSparkles · 20/06/2020 17:06

2 blocks of 10 lessons when I was 17, so 20 hours in total. Passed first time.

Parents cars were both automatic so didn't bother driving those. My first (secondhand banger) was an automatic and all other cars have been automatic. I doubt I could remember how to drive a manual now (test was 16 years ago)

FedUpofLockdown123 · 20/06/2020 17:08

18 months of weekly lessons. Had the odd week or 2 off when my instructor was on holiday plus a 10 week or so break because I was struggling so much. But I'm assuming that must add up to somewhere around 80 Blush. I also took 4 tests. I really, really struggled with learning to drive even after I passed I was scared to get in my car because I felt so incompetent and now a few months on I think to myself what was so hard about this??

mindutopia · 20/06/2020 17:12

Probably about 6-8 weeks, 1 lesson a week, but this was to get my UK license. I had a license in my birth country (other side of the road and automatic). Dh taught me the basics and then I took the lessons.

I got my first license at 16 (provisional at 15!) and learned driving my mum’s beat up Honda around a car park. Never had a formal lesson.

Scabberdikravern · 20/06/2020 17:16

I want to learn to drive by september. I dobt think its possible as still no lessons allowed to happen but if I have them with my mum i migjt be able to?

I passed 12 weeks after my 17th birthday with one lesson a week so 12 hours. Rural Scotland though which is a different kettle of fish to a city or built up area.

PaintYourSpiritGold · 20/06/2020 17:21

I had 21 lessons - also watched a lot of YouTube videos which really helped my learning. Past first time - was so surprised! X

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/06/2020 17:25

If your mum is prepared to take you out then do it. The more hours under your belt the better. Then when you have lessons you can concentrate on doing stuff like reverse parking. But you need to be somewhere fairly quiet if starting off in a non dual control car. I must admit the first time I took Dd out I was scared!

Get on a wait list with an instructor now they are going to be hard to get booked in with once lock down has finished. I suspect there will be a massive back log for test dates, here it’s a 3 month wait for a test in normal times. I’m guessing it’ll be over 6 months now.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 20/06/2020 17:26

My mother always said it takes 1 hour of lessons per year of your age. Weirdly, I passed first time after 18 hours of lessons at age 18! But, that was a long time ago and the test is harder now. I also had about the same number of hours in practising with my parents or others. It probably depends a lot on your hand eye coordination, your natural confidence, and how many hours you can get your mum to take you out. If you can get her to go out with you for and hour a day 4 or 5 times a week the by the time September comes you should be fine. Do try to have a few lessons though, and make sure you read up on what the tests are looking for as you mum won't be as strict about checking all mirrors every 5 seconds or whatever they are currently expecting!

BeautifulCrazy · 20/06/2020 17:28

I had about 25 lessons and passed second time. I had the lessons over 6 months when I was 17 but I do know people who have passed much quicker by having a few lessons each week.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 20/06/2020 17:32

I'm ready at 30 hours but Covid has got in the way! My sodding theory has run out now too (I took my theory, then became ill so 14 months had gone before I could start lessons). I'm actually looking for a small car atm so I can go out with Dh to keep me going (I do drive our 'family' car when we go out but it's a t6 so massive & I won't use it day to day)

user1497207191 · 20/06/2020 17:36

I had 2 lessons, but had been "taught" by my mother. Passed first time.

Did the same with my son last year, taught him myself, but then we booked a course of 5 lessons with a professional instructor (last lesson being the hour before the test). We did that so that the instructor could teach any stuff that wasn't on the test when I did mine, 39 years ago.

RoseyLentil · 20/06/2020 17:39

For my car license- 20 hours and passed first time. For my hgv licence - a four day course with the practical test on the fifth day, passed first time. I like driving Smile

Wheresthebiffer2 · 20/06/2020 17:41

Ten thousand hours over ten yrs. Well it felt like that.
Eventually I passed at the fifth attempt.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/06/2020 17:43

Loads. I was NOT a natural driver. Then it suddenly clicked. Overall, I had lessons over 2 years (but two massive gaps). My third time trying, it was lessons over a 4 month period, two hours most weeks (when childcare allowed). Now had my license for 8years.

Scabberdikravern · 20/06/2020 17:43

Im 37! Never got behind a wheel in my life
