How often does your 3 year old boy drink and use the toilet?

I'm starting to wonder if DS3 has an underlying issue. He is constantly drinking water or juice, he can drink 3 cups of water or juice in the time it takes DD5 to drink half a cup.

Because of this he uses his potty constantly. Today he has had easily 10 wee's so far. It's very clear whenever he does wee which is how it's meant to be

But is it normal for him to be drinking so much at this age?

We have tried giving him sports bottles to drink his water or juice from but he drinks even more then as he seems to find it easier from a bottle

DD doesn't and hasnt ever drank like DS does, we jokingly call him the guzzler because a drink lasts him seconds and he always wants more. Is it normal?

He's great at using his potty and doesn't have accidents throughout the night

I've just never known a small child to drink so much and use the potty so much all the time!

My DS is 4 but hasn’t changed in his routine since he was 3. He has some milk with breakfast. A small cup of watered down juice at snack time at nursery, water or milk with lunch. In the afternoon he has access to his water cup but I don’t really monitor what he has unless he’s running around lots at soft play or it’s hot outside. Water with dinner and then cup of milk between dinner and bed If he wants it. He pees when he gets up around 7. At 10am and 12.30 at nursery. Around 2pm, and usually before bath around 6 and before bed at 7.30ish. Sometimes he gets up in the night to pee.

Is this a new thing or has he always been that way inclined? If new, Type 1 Diabetes springs to mind ... main symptoms are thirst, needing to use toilet, tired and weight loss but u won't necessarily see the latter two in early stages. Without being alarmist, if you think he displays any of those symptoms, please get him checked asap.

If the thirst is new, see the GP. If he's been like this for a while it might be the juice. Sugar free squash makes my kids insanely thirsty.

Try stopping juice and give water only. It might be the sweet taste he is after rather than thirsty. Juice at one mealtime only.

Loads, literally pints, pees like a racehorse every ten minutes. Dry at night.

Def go and see GP. This is how my child was and was diagnosed as type 1 diabetic. If you leave it too long and it is diabetes, it gets very dangerous.

My three year old probably drinks and does a wee every three hours. He will have, over a day, one or two cups of milk and two cups of water. More if he’s hot. He’s my third and I would say typical.

Thanks for the replies

He drank normal amounts when he was a baby but he's been like this ever since he started toddling around.

DD has a drink every few hours, same as the toilet. But DS is constantly drinking! Ive tried to make him wait a bit longer between drinks today and he has said but I'm thirty or but I'm hungry each time

He's the same with eating aswell though he can eat so much more than DD can.

I grew up with all woman in my family so all I know about boys is what I learn from my DS Grin i don't know if it's normal for boys to eat and drink so much

I mentioned it to nursery when he attended but as they only give water at certain times of the day he wasn't the same as when at home

I will make a doctor's appointment just to see if there's any underlying issues as thinking back I know his grandmother had diabetes on his father's side ( not had any contact with any of them for years )

DS was unquenchably thirsty in the lead up to his type 1 diagnosis. He would also get up several times in the night to pee, and I know where every public, shop and cafe loo is in town.

My DS 4 is the same! We took him to the GP who discovered he was drinking 1.5 times the recommended amount for adults! They did lots of tests for Diabetes and Diabetes Insipidus and he was seen by the paediatric endocrinology team who decided he just likes drinking. He drinks all the time and pees constantly.
