What should I wear???

I’ve just moved to North Yorkshire and my clothes make me stand out so much! I thought that I could buy some bits to make me look more ‘local’ but I’m overweight and the traditional tweed jacket and riding pants aren’t going to work for me. Can anyone suggest some ideas or shops that cater to a larger woman, but in the green/tweed style? I’ve tried local shops but everything is either walking gear, riding gear, or size tiny :(

I'm looking forward to seeing where this thread goes Grin

You really don’t need a new wardrobe, just jazz up what you have with a few accessories. Ferret and flat cap work with any outfit.

iklboo · 19/06/2020 23:18

Hardly anyone in North Yorkshire wears riding pants & tweed. Unless you're in a Jilly Cooper novel.

@NotVeryOldForASweatyBird I’ve put on my hard hat, I know the question might cause me some problems 😁

What are you wearing to make you stand out, sequins and hot pants?

SiaPR · 20/06/2020 07:35

Where are you from originally then?

Bluntness100 · 20/06/2020 07:37

Where in Yorkshire are you that everyone is wearing green tweed and riding pants.? Confused

Russell19 · 20/06/2020 07:39

This is so stereotypical!!!! From my experience people only wear those clothes if they are going riding! Your old clothes will be fine.

Ginfilledcats · 20/06/2020 07:42

Ditto the above what are you wearing now?

What outfit style do you want. You'll look daft in tweed and riding gear if you don't have the life style that goes with it.

My aunt lives in Yorkshire and wears very modern chic clothing, not a jodhpur or blazer in sight.

I live in Lancashire and do ride so have the items you describe but only wear them for riding! Day to day I wear my new look jeans or dresses etc

SallyWD · 20/06/2020 07:42

I live in Yorkshire. Never seen anyone wear tweed and riding pants! Just wear what you want. People will be able to cope!

TellerTuesday4EVA · 20/06/2020 07:45

Lived in North Yorkshire all my life... do not own a single piece of tweed.... hope that helps.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 20/06/2020 07:47

iklboo, I’m not entirely sure that Jilly knows Yorkshire exists.

midgebabe · 20/06/2020 07:49

Ferret is so wrong, that's County Durham

TheQueensWave · 20/06/2020 07:54

Moved from the south and this is genuinely what it’s like here. Lots of horses, lots of shooting and lots of green

SiaPR · 20/06/2020 08:04

Why do you need to fit in? Don’t you have a personality?

HugeAckmansWife · 20/06/2020 08:05

There was more shooting and hunting in the part of the South I'm from than the part of the North I moved to.

TheQueensWave · 20/06/2020 08:14

@SiaPR yes obviously I have a personality, but I’m new to the area and hate sticking out so much. I want to try and integrate a bit and wanted some advice on how to do this visually.

@HugeAckmansWife there’s shooting all the time here. There’s no foxes as they cull them to make sure they have enough pheasants and quail

WineIsMyCarb · 20/06/2020 08:18

Also live in North Yorks and t'only thing I wear is the cardboard box we used to live in under t'bridge. Keeps the damp out, like.

Seriously though, even the hunting and shooting types wear jeans and jumpers. If you want to do the 'country look' then go to your nearest horsey stuff shop - they always have gilets ('body warmers') etc.

RedBrownBrick · 20/06/2020 08:21

Following for the entertainment value Smile

OP I haven't been to North Yorkshire for years so have no reason to disbelieve you - I just think the reactions will be amusing..

Or did you start this thread to poke fun at the locals, and no one is playing ball? You don’t need to fit in, because regardless of where you live not everyone is the same.

Placesrobe7099292 · 20/06/2020 08:23

Where is North Yorkshire are you living?!
I’m from North Yorkshire a little quaint town in the dales, I dress the same there as I do now!
I’m intrigued as to where you are!

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 20/06/2020 08:26

My family live in North Yorkshire, I live in Hertfordshire. I didn't realise I needed a separate wardrobe when I went to visit them!!

Bluntness100 · 20/06/2020 08:49

If this isn’t a spoof to take the piss out of people in Yorkshire, is it maybe op you’ve seen one or two women who you envy their look and feel you don’t look great in comparison so want to try to copy them to “fit in”

There is no way everyone runs round in North Yorkshire wearing riding trousers and tweed, so there is obviously something else behind this.

I would say though, if this is about envy you’re going to look daft wearing riding gear and tweed if you don’t actually ride.

Ludways · 20/06/2020 09:07

Here, don't bring County Durham into this!

Bluntness100 · 20/06/2020 09:16

Actually I can see how this could happen.

You move to a new place, you are quite insecure, you see some women who seem confident and you think look good, so you think if you could dress like them you’d fit in better, maybe they’d want to be your friend, or maybe you’d look good too, But you revert to the teenage “everyone does it” similar to but “everyone in school is allowed out till midnight” when actually you just mean a couple of mates.

It’s like if I dress like the popular girls maybe I can be a popular girl too. When actually they don’t care how you dress, integrating is not about donning a uniform, it’s about starting saying hi and smiling, inviting maybe folks round for drinks (when Covid is over) , joining local community events etc, and integrating that way.
