My new flatmate is lovely but hes just had someone round to quote him fitting a lock and key. Its not by flat but have rented it for many years. I dunno I suppose it is normal but in all my years no one has asked and ive shared with alot 😄will he have to ask the landlord?

Yes he should ask as it will effectively damage the door. I've lived in a few flat shares in my life and only ever once had a lock on my door, but in that flat I was very glad of it because those flatmates weren't very reliable! I wouldn't take it personally, maybe he's had bad experiences in the past.

It's not usual. However, many flatmates get into problems because of one person who keeps going out without closing their windows, thereby increasing the likelihood of burglaries. The advice often given is for the other flatmates to put locks on their doors, both for police and insurance purposes. As someone who's lived in flatshares, I'm constantly shocked by the number of people who don't close their windows properly before going out.

We have double doors so the entrance to the hall then the flat doo and another one at the back. No one can get in and if you really really wanted to break in it would be through his window. Then you would find yourself locked in his bedroom so you would nick whatever you could and get back out the window.

Im more worried about fires than been broke into tbh.
