Calling anyone who has had LASEK eye surgery.

I am having LASEK eyesight correction next month and wanted any advice on what you found helpful on the day and afterwards?

I'm don't particularly want to hear horror stories, I know they exist, I know there are risks but this is something I have researched and weighed up and have decided being able to see after 30 years without wearing milk bottle glasses is worth it. If something goes wrong I'll live with it.

I have a darkened room at my disposable, music and audio books a plenty and DH is working from home from now until Jan 2021 but will book a few days off to look after the kids.
I am self employed so will take off the time I need until I can work confidently.

I have thin corneas so and having LASEK (the older style) with iDesign. I am very shortsighted with significant astigmatism in one eye.

I'd like anyone who has had the same procedure and method to let me know what to expect please. Smile

Hi OP have you had it? Was it ok?

I’m day 3 post op and feel awful, found your post.

sonjadog · 15/08/2020 22:44

I have had it. It was fine. A couple of days where I didn't feel great and then I was back to normal. My eyes did get tired for a good while afterwards and I have to wear sunglasses now on sunny days or the light hurts my eyes, but the whole thing went smoothly and I am happy with the results. I had it done maybe 8 years ago.

Make sure you have painkillers in the house and a cooling (not cold!) eye mask.

Oh i want this done one day too. Did you get it done op?

Bells3032 · 15/08/2020 23:45

I had it done nine years ago. I went to the chemist a few days before and asked the the strongest combination of sleeping tablets and painkillers I could take together and basically slept through the firdt few days.

Whoever is picking you up ask them to bring two pillows in the car - on for under your head to rest and the other for over your face to block out the very bright light.

Keep calm and wear the goggles after at night - you do get used to it.

I wish I had been more prepared!! I needed stronger painkillers, sleeping tablets, cold flannels, a darker room and a good three child free days!
Day 4 now and finally my agony has eased. It has been brutal.
I had Lasek which is the more brutal of the two; Lasek and Lasik.

For anyone reading this and having kittens about laser treatment I just wanted to say I had lasik surgery, which is different to lasek , and the recovery period was fine. Given pain relief drops and bug eyed goggles. Eyes began to hurt about three hours post procedure (told this would happen) Advised to go to bed and sleep which I did. Woke up the next morning, put in more drops but eyes not hurting. Continued with drops for a few days and sleep goggles for about a week but no further pain or discomfort. Just wonderful clear sight, no glasses or lenses!!!!!

I had it around 8 years ago. Post op I felt like I had very gritty eyes for a few days then when I had the contact lens bandages removed it felt pretty good. My sight was great for years but last year I’ve become short sighted again so am back to glasses for driving and seeing into the distance. I’ve got a stigmatism so that might be why it hasn’t lasted but I don’t regret having it done as not having glasses or contacts for those years was fantastic.

I have had both (needed redoing). LASIK had me wondering why people complain: mild discomfort but that's all. LASEK had me hiding in a cupboard because I couldn't get the room dark enough and that only decreased the pain a bit. The difference was huge.

I wouldn't suggest people don't do it, it's worth doing, but what type you get makes a massive difference.

And be warned: it will smell like hair burning. Frealy but a good sign!

Pinkyandthebrainz · 16/08/2020 19:55

Painkillers and sleeping tablets (my surgeon provided the sleeping tablets). Day 3 was the worse, felt like I was chopping onions all day. Very watery, very stingy, didn't sleep great that night. My new great sight didn't fully reveal itself till week 6 post surgery.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 16/08/2020 19:57

Agree with wearing sunglasses a lot more now as eyes are more sensitive. I also use eye drops daily as they are drier.

For anyone who has had laser surgery and in later years has had to wear glasses again, is your Current prescription still an improvement on your original? Or has it reverted back to what it was?

sonjadog · 17/08/2020 12:24

I have reading and computer glasses now. I knew that was going to be the case as I was in my later thirties when I had the surgery. I think it took about 4-5 years before I got them after surgery. The current prescription is much better than the old one as I can buy the ready made reading glasses opticans have - my eye-sight is standard.

Binglebong · 17/08/2020 15:05

Mine is better than it was - legally I don't need to wear glasses when driving (often do though- especially if tired). Used to be I couldn't read the school blackboard!

Roominmyhouse · 17/08/2020 20:37

My current prescription isn’t as strong as pre lasek but I feel like in a few more years I could be back to that.
