I didn't know this was still a thing but apparently it is. I think I feel that these homes should remain publically owned so that there is a stock for those who need them.
A young family I know are about to buy the house the live in at a 30% discount. They are very open about the fact that they plan to live there for the required 5 years and then use the profit to move somewhere nicer.
On a personal level, I'm genuinely pleased that they have this opportunity, they're a decent hardworking family, both in averagely paying jobs. They were on the list for a long time before getting this house and lived for quite a while in a small flat with 2 DC.
However, whilst it may take a little longer, there's no reason they couldn't fulfil their plans without removing this home from the council housing stock. By doing this aren't they making life even harder for future families like them?
Is it wrong that these homes are still being sold off, increasing the social/affordable housing crisis? Or is it right that we help families like this, even if there is a cost for future generations?
