I've realised that I can't breathe through one side of my nose - what could it be?

To cut a long story short I've started mouth breathing esp at night and this has caused me some dental issues. Then one thing led to another and I checked my nose for breathing and have discovered that one side is "blocked". I literally can't get much air or out from that side. It would probably explain the mouth breathing but why would this be. I haven't had a cold or a congested nose or anything in a while. My nose is just blocked as in I can't breathe from that one side. The other side is totally fine.

I know i need to see a gp but don't know if I should wait till after the lockdown eases a bit more. When googling I'm not really getting much help.

Just to be clear that I've never had this issue before. I've always been able to breathe through both nostrils properly.

It's quite normal to mainly breathe through one side of your nose at a time. Check it at different times and you'll find that the sides swap throughout the day. If it's always the same side 'blocked' then a GP visit is probably in order.

I had that too, mine was caused by a badly deviated septum which physically blocked one nostril internally. I think I had always had it though but only realised when I was about 30. My nose looked perfectly normal from the outside but I went to the Gp and was referred to an ENT specialist to have a camera up there. I had surgery to correct it but because it was so deviated it could only be improved, not totally fixed.

I also had surgery for a deviated septum, my left nostril was completely blocked. I had the surgery many years ago now, I still can’t breathe quite so well through the left side as the right.

Could also be a nasal polyp, which can randomly grow and cause a blockage.

if just started happening probably nasal polyps. Had several over the years, seem to be sensitive to allergies and pregnancy.

Omg I've just had a look at my nose from the bottom with my phone and I think i do have a bit of a deviated septum! But honestly I've never had problems with air in that one side. I get sinusitis so am aware of blocked sides etc.

Or if it's a polyp. Can I see a polyp up there. What's the treatment for that? whatsnext2

@vffvv steroids can shrink them but it bad then surgery. Not too bad these days, need to get referred to ear nose throat specialist.

turnthebiglightoff · 19/06/2020 21:35

Probably a cold. Blocked sinus. Nothing to worry about!!!

I had it for years then I stopped smoking and it went away.
