Where would you buy furniture from if money were no object?

DP and I are about to buy our first home and of course are so excited! We don't own much of our own furniture at the moment and grew up in homes where our parents either inherited furniture or made do with random bits they found/bought in markets.

We have had an unexpected windfall and would like to invest in some lovely bits of furniture. He wasn't impressed by the quality in IKEA and I'll admit I've not been interested in interiors until recently, so don't know where to start looking.

Where would you recommend looking for good quality, classic and stylish furniture?

If money were no object, and I had the time and inclination, I would go to an auction and buy the real deal. Some original art deco walnut furniture, which is so stylish and timeless, at least as far as I am concerned.

I got some lovely bedroom furniture from The Cotswold Company.
Also got really nice vintage dining room furniture on Ebay

Sandringham.

Everyone has their price.

I’d hire a professional to make made to measure stuff, if money was no object.

B&B Italia
Made.com can be good
West Elm
Heals
John Lewis for lighting
Contract furniture for outdoor
Original pieces from Sunbury Antiques (Kempton) or Lincoln or Newark (Arthur Swallow Fairs)

Sorry, I put each suggestion on a line but it pushed them all together.

I would custom build everything

But I wouldnt really even if I had the money. I like to hunt around for things that can make a home rather than restrict to one brand or shop.

midsomermurderess · 18/06/2020 22:22

I say Heals too. I'd also look out for some lovely authentic mid-century stuff, furniture, light fittings, if I had money to spare.

I have been surprised by how many bespoke furniture makers I have come across whilst doing my job.

Do a google search for local craftsman. Your house will be unique to your tastes and how you’d use it

AnotherEmma · 18/06/2020 22:25

It's not high end but we love our John Lewis sofa.
I wouldn't really know where to look apart from John Lewis. Independent shops maybe?
I think there's a gap in the market!

LovingLen · 18/06/2020 22:29

Oka, I do have some of their very expensive storage boxes that look like books that I picked up in the Next sale. I went for a look round one of the shops in Harrogate, not sure that my house is quite right for the lovely furniture so would probably have to buy a new one of those alsoGrin

Icantreachthepretzels · 18/06/2020 22:38

I can lose hours browsing maison du monde. They stopped making the four poster bed I had my eye on before I achieved my lottery win* though - the swines.

*lottery win not yet achieved.

MartiniDry · 18/06/2020 22:43

Antique shops and auction houses. I'm something of a fan of English oak, and Georgian furniture.

Lonecatwithkitten · 18/06/2020 22:46

Kitchen and dining room furniture from Neptune.

AnnaNimmity · 18/06/2020 22:46

oh probably Heals, Conran Shop, Twentytwentyone places like that. I like the classics like the the tulip table, eames chairs, Tom Dixon that they have there. I'd have a visprung bed - the most comfortable I've ever slept in.

There's some Danish designers too I like.

Probably a very expensive rug (too many young children and pets for that).

You're right to avoid Ikea - it's crap. A false economy

okiedokieme · 18/06/2020 22:50

Cotswold company is decent quality for the price. But money no object I would buy antique

Bloodylovecheese · 18/06/2020 22:50

a DeVol Haberdashery Kitchen...and other bespoke stuff from them

AnotherEmma · 18/06/2020 22:50

I haven't heard of most of these, does everyone live in London, is that where all the lovely furniture shops are?!
