Why do tv producers decide to flood us with the same people all the time?

Fred from the dates programme. Quirky, nice to watch. Now all over the fucking telly. Currently in Marrakesh.

Louis Spence. Funny in small doses in the Pineapple programme. Then got old very quickly with his tiny repertoire of dance moves and camping it up.

Not to mention the Ant/Dec/Holly/Philip thing.

Scarlett Moffatt. Funny and sweet as the daughter in Gogglebox. Now overdosed.

lazy programming , or latest favourite/ must have person that everyone (not me) loves so they have to be in every fucking shite program so that it will be watched

SouthWestmom · 18/06/2020 21:30

Oh that's a good point. The program is crap so they need a popular person.

Nepotism - especially at ITV.

Bilingualspingual · 18/06/2020 21:36

Someone once told me that they’ve actually done surveys/studies and found that people WANT the same people over and over again on tv rather than new people. If that’s true, who on earth did they ask?

StillThatBitch · 18/06/2020 21:37

Contracts? Channels getting their money's worth maybe?

SouthWestmom · 18/06/2020 21:39

Bilingual that is really interesting. I can see that eg loose women people might want to feel they 'know' them? Or magazine type programmes like maybe Watchdog or something?

Stacey Dooley is another one. I read somewhere that the BBC had signed her up to do a certain number of programmes.

Bilingualspingual · 18/06/2020 21:44

You see it with actors too. Good actors, but the same few over and over again. So that people can say ‘oh it’s got that Olivia Colman in it, I like her’, then they’ll switch on.

SouthWestmom · 18/06/2020 21:59

I don't mind so much the journalist types. Like I love Louis doing his thing. It's the random shows that only have this person in common.

I think they're contracted for X number of years so the company may as well get their money's worth!

They did it a while ago with Keeley Hawes.

itispersonal · 18/06/2020 22:03

Rylan Clark - he is on every channel and the radio!

SantanaBinLorry · 18/06/2020 22:07

Its a combo of things already mentioned.
Contracts, what the public want etc.
But it is also down to production companies not taking too much of a risk. Entertainers can be flakey ;) Its why you see the same faces crop in in soaps. Soaps are HARD work and if you've proven youself as a reliable actor on one soap, you've more chance of landing a roll on another. Same goes for T.V dramas/presenting... professonalisim counts (and saves money).

Crockodoodle · 18/06/2020 22:10

We call it Tony slattery syndrome which is showing my age but it's exactly that, suddenly they are everywhere. I don't know who they poll to find out we want the same faces but it's not me,!

SouthWestmom · 18/06/2020 22:13

Yes to Rylan.

See I liked Louis Spence and now I can't stand him.
Fred was sweet at the dining place but isn't interesting enough for a full hour and just relies on being French. It's like he's turning into Gino.
I get the reliability but it's so boring. And they are better in small doses.

OP posts:
Meandyouandyouandme · 18/06/2020 22:13

I thought you were going to say Rylan as well, he’s always over the tv and Joe Lycett. I love them both, but think the jobs should be shared out more.

SouthWestmom · 18/06/2020 22:51

Yes to Rylan being all over the place? Used to like him now bored

The sort of people that answer their landline phone and talk to cold callers.

It’s not about production companies not wanting to take a risk - channels have final sign off on Talent. Production Companies could take any number of new name talent but ultimately, telly is a business and commissioning editors at channels (and channel heads) have to deliver audiences because audiences = advertising reach = revenue.

As a result, names that have rated are a safe bet. Safe bets means arses on sofas means advertisers will buy ‘space’ means more money to make programmes. And the same people will be employed to front those shows because ... well, it’s circular innit.

For the BBC / no advert model, it means world wide format and programme sales (a vastly more important revenue stream than the License). Strictly being an example of this - it’s worth a fortune to the BBC coffers.

Additionally, ITV made an absolute decision about 15 years ago to have a ‘family’ that audiences bought into, liked and trusted. Branding and Marketing.

Ant and Dec. Holly and Phill. The X Factor presenters. BGT ditto. Loose Women etc. People who, if you saw them when you switched on the telly in a multi channel world, would instantly tell you (visually) you were watching ITV. These people were put on Golden Handcuffs and can only appear on the channel. They then become tied into the share price. If they are delivering audiences, share holders and stake holders put pressure on the Top Brass to continue to use them because... well, see above again.

It’s show BUSINESS.
