'Centurion' plant

When I grew up my mum had plants she referred to as 'Centurions' growing in her garden. She was not a gardener so asking her what they were would be pointless, and I'd love to get some for my garden, but they don't come up on Google searches under that name.

The flower head reminds me of a thistle. The whole head is dry and brown, and there's a couple of rows of yellow leaves along the top, like a Centurions helmet.

Can anyone identify this for me?

Globe artichoke maybe? They are like giant thistles, and often grown for their edible flower heads - the 'choke'.

There are Centaurea's (knapweeds), not sure if they're what you're after.

@Gulsink - thank you so much! I can't tell you how many times I've tried finding them online. You're a star!

There was a house nearby that had them growing in the front garden and my mum was always annoyed theirs would flower first each year. Will send her some seeds then we can have our own competition.
