How to stop someone's dog pooing under front hedge?

Dog lovers here - we have a black lab who is loved and cared for, and we clear up after him!

DD lives in a flat in London (first floor conversion), and there is a hedge at the front. Someone walks their dog along the pavement, and regularly allows it to poo under the hedge, on the pavement, wherever, and never clears it up.

She does bleach the area, but was wondering if any of the sprays etc. work as a deterrent, without harming the dog.

Any ideas? TIA

Stand in front of dog and owner and take a photo (preferably in mid-dump but not necessary) and shame the owner into stopping - post photo on local FB page (dog mess quite rightly always gets people riled up) and then send photo to council.

Would do that in an instant if they were ever spotted! Unfortunately they seem to visit under cover of darkness.

I'm assuming it's the same person (and dog) from the size of the poo, and the regularity - one a day!

Just thinking about getting a motion detector camera for the inside of her car, and on the occasions she can park directly outside her flat, that could film them.

Can they put a fence in front of the hedge. Not very high but high enough the dog cant get over it very easily. They can contact the council dog warden for advice. I would fit a camera if its legal.

Stupid question, sorry, but is it dog poo and not cat or even hedgehog poo?

ajandjjmum · 18/06/2020 12:50

I'm pretty sure it's dog poo TwoZero.

She is planning to have the hedge taken down and replace with a fence and gate - but is currently saving! Grin

She's cleaned the pavement and then poured bleach under the hedge, but still it continues. It's just that little section of the pavement, outside 3-4 houses - known in our family as 'dog shit alley'! I'll suggest she contacts the dog warden - that's a good idea.

Thank you both.

I could be wrong.. but isn't there some thing about the ammonia in bleach actually attracting animals back to pee/poo in the same spot?
Maybe stop bleaching for a while and see if it goes elsewhere, since it seems the dipstick owner gives it free rein to choose 🙄
I suppose a motion sensor sprinkler hidden in the hedge is out of the question?...

RhubarbJelly · 18/06/2020 13:04

A series or short garden canes stuck into the soil and a notice on the hedge to ask the dog owner to either choose a different hedge or take one of the bags you have kindly attached to the hedge for the, as they cannot afford any I assume?

RhubarbJelly · 18/06/2020 13:05

I use sticks in my garden when just planted out new plants - to deter cats, as neighbours don’t have to pick up for their cats. Sticks stop them from getting in my flower bed and squashing new plants.

MikeUniformMike · 18/06/2020 13:17

I was going to suggest remove the hedge.

Put a notice up. If the dog reads it, he'll not do it again. Wink

Chilli powder will deter dogs.

HappyHammy · 18/06/2020 13:21

You can get cheap plastic coated chicken wire and attach it to sticks which they can put in front of the hedge. That wont stop dog poop on the pavement and they might just use someone elses garden instead but they should use the gutter and pick it up. Warden and camera.

You're right about that! I have dogs and clean up after them using disinfectant.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 18/06/2020 13:28

Why on earth would she need to apply bleach to the area?

To try and deter the dog from pooing there again! Seemed a sensible idea to me - although thanks to the helpful posters above, I now know it wasn't such a good idea! Grin

Will try the chilli!

We had a similar problem many years ago with a dog being allowed to pooh right outside our front gate.

I used Pepper Dust (from Dyas I think) was very effective. Although does need using frequently and after rain.

Also deters cats I believe.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 18/06/2020 13:47

The bleach will probably kill the hedge now, so problem solved I guess.
