Can we talk about tampons?

Ok so for the last 3 years ive been using a combination of a ruby cup and cloth pads. I moved to these after it became uncomfortable to use tampons and i was concerned about toxic chemicals.

The trouble is ive been advised not to use the cup anymore for health reasons. I cant cope with using the cloth pads all the time and sitting in my own blood (I have a fairly heavy flow) so im thinking about organic cotton tampons

Which tampons expand width ways as i have a short vagina? Which organic tampons are good at absorbing a medium to heavy flow? how can i combat dryness?

Has anyone else have problems with tampons sitting low and/or dryness and has overcome this?

I dunno but I bought some tonight based purely on the fact that they were limited edition unicorn ones. Spending too much time with my five year old, clearly.

TheSmallAssassin · 17/06/2020 22:34

It's a long time since I used tampons, but I found Lil-lets good - they expand widthways and they apparently do an organic version.

Sforsh49 · 17/06/2020 22:52

Brand called Time of the Month or TOTM can buy online or in Tesco. Pretty sure they do a non applicator tampon. I had horrendous issues with fragranced/non organic brands and had no problems with these!

@MrsCocoaJones8 unicorn tampons? Just the though of that is making my vagina itch lol. Are they glittery? haha

I have a tilted pelvis and find lilets organic non applicator by far the best. When I insert them I almost leave them sideways as if across my cervix (I know that sounds weird) but I don’t feel them at all and very, very rarely will I have a leak. Worth trying.

Toseland · 17/06/2020 22:56

I’ve just stopped using tampons after finding they were causing my cramping.

Youngatheart00 · 17/06/2020 22:57

Tampons can cause cramping?! I’ve never heard that before!!

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2020 22:57

I like Natracare Super nonapplicator tampons. Organic 100% cotton, no bleach, no chemicals. No plastic packaging as they are wrapped in compostable potato starch bioplastic.

CatBatCat · 17/06/2020 23:26

Ohne 100% organic tampons with ot without applicators

Littlebyerockerboo · 18/06/2020 00:45

Cup user here, and I've heard that tampons cause cramping - but why is this?
Funnily enough, I cramp less once my cup is in situ...
Sorry no help op, and sorry for hijacking your thread a little bit with my unhelpful question!

TwistinMyMelon · 18/06/2020 01:07

Tampons give me awful cramps too.

shuttheblinds · 18/06/2020 01:51

Tampons do cause cramping. I couldn’t use them because of this. My gynae actually told me not to use them if I suffer with cramps as they would make them worse.

Shinebright72 · 18/06/2020 01:55

Tampax pearl are the best application I’ve ever used.

Littleshortcake · 18/06/2020 02:00

I love the original tampax with cardboard applicator but last month used the Tesco own brand and they were unscented and I will buy them again.

SarahTancredi · 18/06/2020 02:00

Lilets expand width ways and they do applicator free ones so slightly less waste than applicator tampons although are unfortunately still wrapped in plastic.

As far as tampons though they are better than tampax. Although I have decided to ditch them now for a cup.

I keep seeing cally and yoppie and TOTM appear on my timeline for some reason think they are subscriptions no idea what getting are like to use.

You can also get a reusable applicator I believe if you needed one but didnt want the plastic waste of the disposable ones.

SarahTancredi · 18/06/2020 02:03

Dryness is unavoidable really as that's what tampons do they absorb all moisture.

But removal etc wont be as painful if you use the lowest absorbancy possible for your flow which does sadly mean having a permanent supply of regular, super , superplus etc and using accordingly

Bioprepper · 18/06/2020 10:28

Thanks for the suggestions. Its funny how we are all different as i got terrible cramps with cups but dont with tampons. My craps were like muscle cramps inside my vagina, sometimes waking me up in the night, It didnt like the cup being there at all and as soon as i use tampons or pads that cramp stops. lots of people said cups reduce period pains and flow but they did neither for me.

I think il order a few of the tampons and try them out. Certainly want to go down the chemical free organic route. Hopefully il find one i like :)

I switch between several organic tampon brands, depending what's on offer, and all the non-applicator ones expand widthways like lil-lets. I can't tell the difference between them tbh.

Pavlova31 · 18/06/2020 13:29

Li Lets very comfortable for me and i like the width wise expansion to avoid leaks.
I find a couple of drops of KY on the tampon before insertion deas with dryness and high enough placement Op.

Pavlova31 · 18/06/2020 13:30

deals not deas ...

Pavlova31 · 18/06/2020 13:31

Also using the lowest absorbency tampon that you need at the time helps too.

GreyishDays · 18/06/2020 13:35

I thought all non applicator ones expand only widthways.

paap1975 · 18/06/2020 13:36

Another vote for Natracare. I also use their panty liners, etc.
I can't understand why anyone votes Tampax, because they are by far the worst I have used. They really don't expand properly.
I wish I could use cups, but my body really doesn't like them

LokisLover · 18/06/2020 13:41

I use natracare too and really rate them , they expand widthways and are organic, biodegradable etc. It may sound grim but I use a bin just for them with compost liner so I can put them in the compost bin

OrchidJewel · 18/06/2020 20:32

I'm fascinated how you can know the shape of your vaginas, short, long, tilted etc. I've never thought about it.

I'll be giving the natracare a try as I can't wear anything either and cramp up too. Sometimes have to resort to my son's nappies Blush awful
