Supermarket substitutions

I only started doing online grocery shopping at the start of lockdown because I live with a vulnerable person. To be fair, Tesco have been good overall. However, in today's shopping they subbed Greek yoghurt for Natural yoghurt. These are not the same thing! Why not give me another brand of Greek yoghurt? If none available, then there are no appropriate substitutions.

I also bought 7+ month baby jar food. They subbed this for 10+ months baby food pouches! These are not the same thing. A 7 month old baby may not be able to eat 10+ months food pouches.

What interesting substitutions has everyone else received recently?

Really? Hmm

PoirotAndHisMoustache · 17/06/2020 19:08

I ordered oven cleaner and got a toilet cleaner instead 🤷‍♀️

You should be able to turn off substitutions so you don't get anything if your chosen item isn't in stock.

Isn't Greek yoghurt essentially strained natural yoghurt?

Tootytata · 17/06/2020 19:13

Thanks Tweet.

I don't mind substitutions as long as the item is similar. If it's a different brand that's fine, but not great when it's a different product altogether.

Honestly, those seem like entirely reasonable subs 🤷‍♀️

Aquamarine1029 · 17/06/2020 19:18

I was once substituted fresh dill for fresh rosemary. Grin Not the same thing at all!

ChippyMinton · 17/06/2020 19:18

Use the no subs option next time and you will get no yoghurt and no baby food (or whatever).

ilovewinterpansies · 17/06/2020 19:18

YABU. These substitutions are fine.

My favourite is replacing condoms with a pregnancy test 😂

ChippyMinton · 17/06/2020 19:19

Also, the subs should be pointed out to you so you can accept or reject.

superstar84 · 17/06/2020 19:21

With Tesco if you view your basket as a list rather than the pictures there's the option to write a note to the picker

I always use this and write if sub different Greek yoghurt brand or if sub age 7+etc

It's great as the picker always reads my notes and sends what I've requested

Cruddles · 17/06/2020 19:27

Someone i know did the online shopping stock filling. They're not standing there for minutes contemplating what substitution you'd like, they're rushing as fast as they can. No Greek yoghurt? Look there's another type of yoghurt, done.

If you don't want it you can reject it at delivery, the driver should make it clear

PenOrPencil · 17/06/2020 19:33

I had to stop substitutions with Sainsbury’s as they were getting a bit silly and they are also not accepting returns at the moment.

Need to check whether you can do comments, that would be really helpful!

Tootytata · 17/06/2020 19:36

This is not AIBU! I'm not brave enough for that section. That's why I thought I'd have a light hearted chat here. Seems nowhere is safe for friendly conversation on Mumsnet.

This thread comes up ALL the time. I liked the sausage rolls as a sub for tampons!!! Or the meat sausages for vegan ones!!! Confused

I ordered frozen spring rolls and got a giant, India gourd vegetable once! Your subs a fine in comparison OP!

Teacaketotty · 17/06/2020 19:40

I ordered hash brown waffles ( which are awesome if you haven’t tried them) - they have me potato waffles, not unreasonable but devastating none the less!

They always sub any baby food I order for a different age group, why not a different flavour she can’t actually eat!

Elouera · 17/06/2020 19:41

OP- You can go back into your asda account (within I think 3 days of delivery) and ask for a refund for certain reasons. Short dated, damaged, unacceptable substitution etc. I've used that a few times when I've received off salmon, mouldy tomatoes, out of date meat and cracked eggs! I don't think 'normal' yoghurt for Greek yoghurt would be an unsuitable sub though!

Roselilly36 · 17/06/2020 19:42

I had drinking chocolate powder subbed for Cocoa, that was no good at all, but generally most subs are sensible. I did know someone who ordered carrots and the subbed item sent was fishfingers 😂

BiteyShark · 17/06/2020 19:42

Most subs are fine and welcomed.

I hardly ever return subs unless they are really stupid. The worst are when they sub non alcoholic wine/beer for alcoholic ones Sad

coronaornona · 17/06/2020 19:45

I got Sauvignon blanc instead of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Not the same at all. I did get a refund though and my friend drank it

ToothFairyNemesis · 17/06/2020 19:48

Those are decent subs op, I don’t see the issue. If your baby is too young put them away until he is , if they had not given you any you wouldn’t be in a better position,

StressyMcStressFace · 17/06/2020 19:49

My best one was when they substituted Earphones for a pungent of raspberries! Confused

StressyMcStressFace · 17/06/2020 19:51

Pungent? Punnet obviously!

Abadon34 · 17/06/2020 19:53

I once got a pack of lightbulbs instead of onions. You got substituted yogurt for yogurt and baby food for baby food. How is that unreasonable?

JollyAndBright · 17/06/2020 19:54

A couple of weeks ago i had vegetarian mince substituted for a cucumber.

Your subs are reasonable, at least they were similar.
