Veggie recipes using Marmite

DP and I are gradually becoming veggies. This is our first full veggie month. I was wondering if anyone had any recipes that benefit from adding marmite?

We already add marmite to eggs on toast, beans on toast, sandwiches.

I’m thinking that because marmite gives an umami taste, it might be good to add it to something like a veggie chilli, or similar?

Cook spaghetti. Drain. Stir in a spoonful of marmite (maybe a bit of butter) and some grated cheese.
Heaven.

Thank you. I’ve seen you mention that one before (but we haven’t tried it yet). I’ve been missing around on a lot of veggie food threads Smile.

Missing around - I meant nosing around.

It goes well in anything with a tomato based sauce I find (I don't eat meat either.)
Always add it to spag bol etc, I think my mum adds it to chilli. Add it to gravy too.

I'll think of some more examples tomorrow as I'm falling asleep but it's a staple ingredient here!

I'm not vegetarian but I do cook quite a lot of meat free meals and I add a teaspoon of marmite to a number of recipes, both with and without meat. I put it in bolognese, shepherds pie, chilli con carne, stroganoff etc. Come to think of it, my mushroom stroganoff recipe has quite a lot of marmite in it, but I've not made it for ages and can't remember the exact amounts sorry. Basically if I'm making more or less any kind of soup, sauce or gravy and it seems to be missing something when I taste it I will add either a bit of marmite or a squirt of tomato puree (or sometimes both) to give it a bit of a lift. My DH has no idea how much I use it as he says he hates marmite and would probably refuse to try things if he knew I'd added it. But as long as he is unaware he wolfs down the food that I cook. Hmm

I love cheese on toast,or toasted cheese and onion sandwiches with Marmite spread on before you put the cheese on.

TazSyd · 17/06/2020 15:23

Yes it would be nice in Spag Bol.

Mushroom Stroganoff would be good too. I e not made that before, so I will look up a recipe.

I think anything that we used to use mince in (but now use Puy lentils) would be good with a bit of marmite.

I always use all the red/brown things in a veggie stew or shepherds pie. If you add flour to thicken before adding liquid add marmite (and soy sauce, and red wine, and tomato paste, and miso if I have it) then.

My gran used to make savoury scones with marmite in them. Mix it with milk to get it in the dough with the water and egg (I think, haven't made scones for ages).

Thank you. I hadn’t considered soy sauce, other than on Chinese food.

That’s what we’re having tonight - Jamie Oliver’s sesame and soy veg stir fry.

We had Nigella’s marmite pasta last night. I think that could be addictive Smile.

Thank you @TheFormerPorpentinaScamander

We always add it to spag Bol, gravy, cheese and marmite quiche, I love it on jacket potato with cheese.

Brussel spouts lightly steamed (not mushy) then rolled in a mix of butter and marmite. Sounds really odd I know, and I was sceptical, but surprisingly nice!

I add a tea or tablespoon into most soups. Sometimes it replaces a stockcube

I'm not sure about veggie mince, but in my Bolognese, I add a splash or balsamic vinegar and red wine, which reduces and adds a nice flavour.

TazSyd · 20/06/2020 08:09

I love Brussel Sprouts. That sounds really nice!

Baked bean "meatloaf" - www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/Baked_bean_veggy-loaf.

Honestly, it's lush.

Sheet of ready rolled puff pastry
Spread with Marmite
Sprinkle generously with grated cheese
Roll up
Slice into,1cm sections
Cook on 180 fan

Try to resist eating the lot at once.
