Facebook selling drama- where do I stand?

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 18:01

I sold an item on Facebook

Buyer paid PayPal

I posted

They received

They have messaged me saying very untrue things about the item (along the lines of its broken etc)

They are definitely lying and I’ve never had this before so I’m really shocked.

What might happen? Can they take their payment back via PayPal?

I’m actually raging that people can do this.

Yes common scam.

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 18:03

So will they easily get a refund via PayPal?

OP posts:
MogHog · 16/06/2020 18:04

Yeah, ebay will side with the buyer, very common and thats why i no longer sell on there

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 18:06

It was Facebook, not eBay

Happened to me on eBay with a kindle. I had no choice but to refund but I made the lying bugger sent it back to me, even though that cost me money. Nothing wrong with it at all. I later went on to sell it to a non-scammer no problem.

Backtoschoolwhen · 16/06/2020 18:08

@MogHog
It wasn’t ebay. OP says it was Facebook. As a sidenote though, Ebay will side with the seller if photographic evidence before sending is strong enough to disprove what recipient is claiming.

GoBackToPartyCity · 16/06/2020 18:09

Did they pay goods and services or friends and family?

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 18:15

I’m not sure if they paid as friends or goods.
I will log in to PayPal to see.

If I make them send it back do they HAVE to? Or can they just get a refund anyway?

I have a feeling what they have done is they have owned the item and broken it.
Then bought my brand new version and now sending pics of their broken one.

For clarification the item can’t be broken in transit.
You would have to ‘wear it out over a period of months’ type broken

ARGHH RAGING

OP posts:
ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 18:23

I have looked at the transaction but it doesn’t state wether it’s F&F or G&S

OP posts:
MuchTooTired · 16/06/2020 18:39

If you click on the transaction and go into it, if fees have been deducted it’s not F&F.

NoRoomInBed · 16/06/2020 18:51

I don't think they can if it was through Facebook. PayPal will probably tell them to go to small claims court.

ButteryPuffin · 16/06/2020 18:53

How quickly after it arrived did they say it was broken? Sounds dodgy

InvisibleToEveryone · 16/06/2020 18:58

Tell them to send back and you'll refund once you've checked your security watermark to prove its your one.....

Bet they don't want a refund then

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 19:00

@MuchTooTired
There’s no fees so it must be a friends & family payment.
Is this a good thing for me then?

OP posts:
ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 19:02

It will have arrived today or yesterday.

She is now telling me she doesn’t appreciate being called a liar (even though I didn’t actually say she was a liar)

I’ve been sure to be polite but firm in my responses to her.

I said I’m not willing to refund but if she replies demanding it I will take your advice and ask for it to be returned to me first (although I can’t say I feel comfortable giving her my address)

Anyway. From now on I will only sell in person!!

OP posts:
GivenchyDahhling · 16/06/2020 19:04

Yes; if it’s friends and family they can’t claim via PayPal, it’s like sending a bank transfer. Their only recourse would be small claims (unlikely for a scammer)

MuchTooTired · 16/06/2020 19:05

@ItchyScratch I believe it’s good for you! F&F payments can’t be recalled or refunded back, so it’s at your discretion to return the money.

Glass45 · 16/06/2020 19:05

This happened to me before, and I really regretted it but I gave her a
50% refund. She was pretty horrible. She collected it so she had my mobile number and I had to block her in the end because she sent endless WhatsApp’s. (I sent her the 50% refund and then blocked her.)

It was a pram and it was in no way broken when I sold it to her (And I sold it to her for a really good price to begin with). I even offered to help sort out getting it fixed as it was under warranty - she refused that Hmm

Sorry OP. I don’t get why people do this, it’s so disingenuous.

(I think the woman who did this to me was angry because she’d driven a really long way and actually didn’t like the model of pram after all.)

Are they sending pictures of the item?

rooarsome · 16/06/2020 19:07

Happened to me but they paid for goods rather than F&F. PayPal sided with them. I asked for pictures, offered to pay for postage back and to refund them which they refused so they ended up keeping the (quite expensive) item and got their money back too.

GivenchyDahhling · 16/06/2020 19:10

Don’t give her your address! Just block and ignore, you’ve morally done nothing wrong. FYI, this is what a transaction which is not F&F (this was eBay) looks like, with the fee deducted. Here; if the buyer had an issue they could start a Paypal case and would probably win.

Facebook selling drama- where do I stand?
DreamingofSunshine · 16/06/2020 19:16

@ItchyScratch I think it means they have no protection as F&F is meant to be to pay people you know and trust. G&S is for selling to strangers.

ItchyScratch · 16/06/2020 19:30

Thank you all. You’re all brilliant.
It’s put my mind at rest knowing all of the above.

I haven’t replied to her last message and it’s been over an hour.
I’m not going to bite. I’m just going to ignore her.

It is a shame that there are people out there who do this type of thing. Grrr
